Alex Baena’s late winner earned Atlético Madrid a 1–0 victory at Espanyol. Read the match report, statistics, reaction, and Uganda context.

Alex Baena scored an 89th-minute winner as Atlético Madrid defeated Espanyol 1–0 at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday, 17 October.

The substitute’s intervention rewarded Atlético’s persistence after a contest in which both teams struck the woodwork, and the hosts repeatedly resisted pressure.

Espanyol’s official match report confirms Baena’s effort from outside the penalty area settled the encounter just before the final whistle.

For Ugandan supporters, this was a reminder of how quickly a match can change: Atlético spent most of the afternoon searching for a breakthrough, then left with all three points.

Early Chances Fail to Produce a Goal

Atlético threatened early through Lee Kang-in and Jonathan David, while Ademola Lookman also had an opportunity.

Espanyol gradually established more of an attacking presence. Roberto Fernandez went close following a corner, and Leandro Cabrera struck the crossbar with a shot from outside the area.

The home side’s ability to remain organised kept the contest level. Their goalkeeper, Angel Fortuno, would also become important as Atlético continued looking for an opening.

The first half therefore offered reasons for both teams to believe. Atlético could point to their attacking opportunities; Espanyol had evidence that their resistance could be accompanied by a threat of their own.

Simeone Uses His Bench to Change the Options

Diego Simeone made changes at halftime, introducing Julian Alvarez and Alejandro Grimaldo for Lookman and Dani Martinez.

Marcos Llorente subsequently replaced Pablo Barrios, before Baena entered for Kang-in.

Atlético’s official match coverage records those adjustments and Llorente’s strike against the crossbar shortly after the hour.

Alvarez also tested the goalkeeper later in the match, helping maintain the pressure as time began running out.

The changes underline a practical feature of squad football. Substitutes must offer something useful against opponents who have already spent considerable time defending. Fresh movement, different passing angles and individual shooting quality can all alter the questions a defence must answer.

Baena Finally Finds the Breakthrough

Fortuno’s interventions had helped Espanyol remain level, but Baena’s late effort from the edge of the penalty area proved decisive.

Sky Sports records the goal in the 89th minute, transforming a likely draw into an Atlético victory.

The finish mattered because territorial advantage had not previously produced a winning scoreline. Atlético still required a player to make the decisive attacking action.

For Baena, coming off the bench did not reduce the importance of his role. His contribution settled the result and ensured the work of the preceding minutes produced a greater reward.

Espanyol vs Atlético Madrid: Match Statistics

Sky Sports’ match statistics show Atlético enjoyed substantially more possession and generated more attempts.

Statistic
Espanyol
Atlético Madrid

Possession
29.6%
70.4%

Total shots
10
19

Shots on target
2
6

Corners
4
12

Passing accuracy
72.5%
89.6%

Woodwork hit
1
1

The figures explain Atlético’s pressure but also Espanyol’s frustration. The hosts conceded only once despite the possession imbalance, and their own effort against the crossbar could have changed the match.

Atlético’s 12 corners and six attempts on target reflect repeated attacking involvement. Nevertheless, the winning margin remained one goal.

That distinction is important when assessing performance: creating pressure and converting it are connected tasks, but they are not identical.

González Regrets Another Painful Finish

In his post-match assessment, Espanyol coach Manolo Gonzalez described the defeat as another cruel outcome after the previous match against Malaga.

He acknowledged difficulties during the opening 25 minutes but felt his team adjusted well and competed with discipline.

Gonzalez explained that Espanyol wanted to remain in contention late enough to have an opportunity to win. Instead, the closing stages brought defeat.

His reaction identifies the difficult balance facing the hosts. Staying organised against stronger pressure can preserve a chance of earning points, but one lapse or an exceptional finish can still undo that work.

The next step is translating competitive performances into results.

Atlético Extend Their Winning Run

The victory followed league successes against Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Real Madrid and Alaves, making this Atlético’s fifth consecutive LaLiga win.

It also maintained momentum after their Champions League victory over Manchester United. Our Atlético Madrid 2–0 Manchester United report covers that European result and the contributions of Pablo Barrios and Lookman.

The contrast between those matches is useful. Different opponents demand different routes to victory, and Atlético found the necessary solution here only near the end.

What It Means for Ugandan Supporters

For Atlético supporters following from Kampala, Jinja, Gulu and Mbarara, the most memorable moment was Baena’s finish. The broader encouragement lies in the team’s ability to keep searching without conceding.

However, the narrow margin should remain part of the conversation. Espanyol were competitive, and Atlético needed their goalkeeper, defensive concentration, and substitutes to preserve the possibility of winning.

For neutral Ugandan fans, this was an example of a contest whose significance exceeded its goal count.

The result rewards persistence, while the performance leaves room for sharper finishing before future matches reach such an uncertain conclusion.

Verdict: Baena Makes the Difference

Atlético’s pressure finally produced a reward through Baena’s late intervention. Espanyol’s resistance made the victory demanding, while Simeone’s bench helped sustain the search for a goal. For Ugandan supporters, the conclusion is clear: Atlético have momentum, but their next performances must combine that resilience with earlier attacking efficiency throughout matches.
