Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat Ipswich 3–2. Read the key moments, match statistics, Maresca’s record, and Uganda context.

Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start with a 3–2 victory over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 17 October.

Phil Foden opened the scoring, and Erling Haaland struck twice after Daizen Maeda’s equaliser. Zian Flemming’s late penalty ensured City had to protect their advantage until the final whistle.

The victory also delivered history: Enzo Maresca became the first manager to win his opening seven Premier League matches in charge of a club.

For City supporters in Uganda, the result offered another celebration, alongside reminders that possession and attacking quality do not eliminate defensive risk.

Foden Returns Before Haaland Takes Charge

Foden’s movement supplied the breakthrough, allowing him to meet Doku’s delivery and finish first time.

Ipswich responded almost immediately. Maeda attacked space behind the defence, held off Marc Guehi and found the bottom corner.

City recovered through Haaland, who benefited from Mateo Kovacic’s work before halftime. Iliman Ndiaye later supplied the pass for the Norwegian’s second.

There were opportunities to extend the lead further, including Ndiaye striking the crossbar. Instead, Guehi’s foul on Abdul Fatawu allowed Flemming to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot.

City’s attacking combinations had earned their advantage, but the closing scoreline left little room for another mistake.

Match Statistics Tell the Wider Story

Sky Sports’ match statistics show City controlled possession and generated substantially more attempts.

Statistic
Manchester City
Ipswich Town

Possession
69.8%
30.2%

Total shots
19
8

Shots on target
6
3

Expected goals
3.53
1.66

Corners
2
3

Passing accuracy
90.5%
80.8%

Yellow cards
1
2

The figures support City’s superiority without suggesting complete comfort. They created enough to make the winning margin larger, while Ipswich converted two of their three attempts on target.

Expected goals provide context about chance quality; they do not mean a team should automatically score an exact number.

The corner count also illustrates why individual statistics need context. Ipswich won more corners despite having much less possession and fewer shots.

Maresca Makes Premier League History

City’s record announcement places Maresca ahead of Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who each won their opening six Premier League games with their respective clubs.

Seven victories have delivered 21 points. City’s published figures also show 19 goals scored and six conceded across those matches.

This is an exceptional foundation, although the value extends beyond the record itself. Winning consistently creates room to develop combinations, rotate players and address weaknesses while collecting points.

Our Manchester City 5–3 Sunderland report provides earlier context: City have already shown they can win matches featuring considerable attacking success and defensive complications.

Bouaddi Offers Another Encouraging Performance

Ayyoub Bouaddi marked his first Premier League start with a contribution that went beyond simply keeping possession moving.

City’s assessment credited him with 92 touches, seven ground duels won and seven line-breaking passes.

In his post-match reaction, Bouaddi acknowledged Ipswich’s quality and the pressure involved in protecting the lead.

His involvement offers another useful storyline for supporters following Maresca’s squad development. A successful season requires reliable contributions beyond the established match-winners.

The next measure is consistency: repeating sound decisions when opponents press differently, restrict space or force City to defend longer.

Maresca Praises Progress and Addresses Fitness Concerns

Maresca’s post-match comments emphasised the players’ daily improvement. He felt City controlled the match, created chances and performed well without the ball.

There were also fitness questions involving Haaland, Kovacic, Matheus Nunes, Nico O’Reilly and Antoine Semenyo.

The manager said Haaland, Kovacic and Nunes had told him they were okay. O’Reilly had an existing back issue, while Semenyo required further assessment.

Those distinctions matter. A player appearing uncomfortable does not establish a diagnosis or a confirmed absence. Upcoming selections should be judged against subsequent official updates.

What It Means for Ugandan Supporters

For City fans in Kampala, Jinja, Gulu and Mbarara, seven successive league victories provide plenty of talking points.

Haaland remains decisive, Foden has returned with a goal, and Bouaddi has added an encouraging midfield contribution.

However, Ipswich’s resistance reinforces the importance of reading the performance alongside the result. City’s attacking strength carried them through, while the late penalty made the finish less comfortable.

Our Manchester City vs Ipswich preview provides the pre-match context. The completed game adds evidence about both City’s strengths and the improvements still available.

Verdict: City Keep Winning With Lessons Remaining

Haaland’s finishing and Foden’s return helped preserve a remarkable start. Ipswich made City earn their points, exposing the danger of leaving a contest open. For Ugandan supporters, the conclusion is encouraging: City have momentum, depth and goals, with defensive concentration still essential to sustaining their success. The challenge is carrying those standards into the next fixture while responding quickly whenever opponents find openings.
