Viking held Bayern Munich to a dramatic 3-3 Champions League draw after Harry Kane scored twice and Michael Olise was sent off.

Viking FK earned the first Champions League point in their history after Herman Haugen scored a dramatic late equaliser in a 3-3 draw against ten-man Bayern Munich in Stavanger.

The Norwegian champions established a remarkable 2-0 half-time lead through Gianni Stensness and Peter Christiansen. Harry Kane scored twice in six second-half minutes before Luis Diaz completed Bayern’s comeback in the 71st minute.

However, Bayern’s Michael Olise was sent off three minutes later, allowing Viking to apply late pressure. Haugen converted in the 90th minute to rescue a famous point for the hosts at Viking Stadion.

Bayern dominated possession and attempted 26 shots, but Viking’s efficiency, organisation and determination produced one of the biggest surprises of the Champions League matchday.

Stensness gives Viking a dream start

Viking required less than two minutes to take a stunning lead against the six-time European champions.

Captain Zlatko Tripić delivered a corner into the Bayern penalty area, where Stensness climbed above the visiting defenders and headed beyond goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

Bayern had travelled to Norway as strong favourites following their emphatic 5-0 Champions League victory over Bodø/Glimt. Instead, Vincent Kompany’s team found themselves behind before establishing any rhythm.

The visitors responded by dominating possession and pushing Viking towards their penalty area. Joshua Kimmich and Tom Bischof directed Bayern’s passing, while Olise, Diaz and Lennart Karl attempted to create space around Kane.

Viking nevertheless maintained their compact defensive structure. The hosts blocked several attempts before attacking quickly whenever Bayern surrendered possession.

Christiansen doubles Viking’s advantage

Viking’s counterattacking strategy delivered another remarkable moment in the 38th minute.

A rapid three-pass move carried the ball through Bayern’s midfield and released Christiansen behind the visiting defence. The Danish forward kept his composure and finished with his left foot past Urbig.

The goal sent the home support into celebration and left Bayern facing a 2-0 deficit at half-time.

It was a dramatic contrast to Bayern’s previous European performance, when they scored five second-half goals against Bodø/Glimt. Their attacking quality remained clear, but defensive vulnerability and Viking’s direct transitions had given the Norwegian side a commanding advantage.

Kane leads Bayern’s second-half comeback

Bayern returned after the interval with greater urgency and were awarded a penalty when Haugen fouled Konrad Laimer inside the area.

Kane converted from the spot in the 54th minute, sending goalkeeper Arild Østbø in the wrong direction. The England captain then equalised only six minutes later, heading Kimmich’s delivery into the net.

The two goals completely changed the contest. Viking, who had protected their lead with discipline, suddenly struggled to escape Bayern’s pressure.

Kane was named UEFA’s Player of the Match after recording six attempts, scoring twice and leading Bayern’s recovery.

The striker then contributed to Bayern’s third goal. His pass released Laimer on the right, and the defender’s low delivery reached Diaz, who converted from close range in the 71st minute.

Having trailed 2-0, Bayern were now 3-2 ahead and appeared positioned to complete a memorable comeback.

Olise dismissal changes the match again

Bayern’s control lasted only three minutes.

Olise was booked after pulling back Henrik Heggheim to prevent a Viking counterattack. The French winger then reacted angrily and threw the ball towards Tripić, receiving another yellow card in quick succession.

The dismissal was Olise’s first senior red card and left Bayern defending their narrow advantage with ten players.

It was an unexpected mistake from a player who had recently produced a hat-trick during Bayern’s 7-0 Bundesliga victory over Union Berlin. His absence removed an important outlet on the right and encouraged Viking to attack with greater numbers.

The hosts pushed forward during the closing stages, with Tripić continuing to supply dangerous deliveries into Bayern’s penalty area.

Haugen delivers historic Viking equaliser

Viking’s pressure was rewarded in the 90th minute when Haugen arrived in an advanced position and converted the equaliser.

The goal triggered jubilant celebrations around Viking Stadion. Bayern attempted to respond during stoppage time, but the Norwegian champions protected their point until the final whistle.

The outcome was especially notable because the Bangbet Uganda Viking-Bayern preview had identified Bayern’s superior experience and attacking depth while warning that Viking’s artificial pitch, home record and counterattacks could make the contest difficult.

Those local advantages proved significant, reinforcing the uncertainty of football predictions.

Bayern’s 26 attempts included 13 blocked shots, illustrating Viking’s commitment inside their defensive area. The visitors also completed more than twice as many passes and generated 82 attacks, but the hosts scored with three of their five efforts on target.

What the result means for both teams

Bayern have four points and a plus-five goal difference after two Champions League fixtures. Kompany’s team remain unbeaten in the competition, but surrendering a 3-2 lead will feel like a missed opportunity.

Their next European fixture is a major home match against Arsenal on Wednesday, October 21.

Viking have one point after opening their campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart. They remain outside the qualification positions, but holding Bayern provides confidence before their trip to Aston Villa.

The point also carries historical importance as Viking’s first in the Champions League league phase.

What the match means for Ugandan supporters

Ugandan supporters watching the 10:00 p.m. EAT kick-off received a reminder that reputation does not decide football matches.

Bayern’s attacking quality produced a spectacular recovery, but Viking demonstrated the value of set pieces, compact defending and efficient counterattacks. Olise’s dismissal also showed how one disciplinary mistake can transform a contest.

For Ugandan fans following Kane, his two goals provided another example of his finishing and leadership. However, Haugen and Viking claimed the defining moment by refusing to surrender against one of Europe’s most decorated clubs.

Conclusion

Viking’s 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich will be remembered as a historic European night in Stavanger.

Stensness and Christiansen gave the hosts a dream first half before Kane’s double and Diaz’s goal appeared to complete Bayern’s comeback. Olise’s avoidable dismissal changed the momentum once more, allowing Haugen to secure Viking’s first Champions League point.

Bayern’s dominance in possession and attempts could not compensate for defensive mistakes and poor discipline. Viking, meanwhile, demonstrated that courage, organisation and efficient finishing can reduce even the largest apparent difference in quality.
