Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 through Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman as Leny Yoro was sent off in the Champions League.

Manchester United’s difficult start to the season deepened after Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 Champions League victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

Pablo Barrios struck inside the opening minute before substitute Ademola Lookman sealed Atletico’s victory in the 79th minute. United defender Leny Yoro was controversially sent off between the two goals following a VAR-assisted review.

Michael Carrick’s side created several opportunities but failed to convert any of their four big chances. The defeat extended United’s winless run in all competitions to five matches and increased the pressure surrounding the head coach.

For Atletico, it was an important response to their opening Champions League defeat at Liverpool. Diego Simeone’s team moved level with United on three points after two league-phase fixtures.

Barrios punishes another poor United start

United’s plans were disrupted before they had an opportunity to settle into the contest.

A straightforward ball over the defence released Alex Baena, who supplied Barrios inside the penalty area. The midfielder’s finish deflected off Ayden Heaven and beat Senne Lammens, despite the defender’s attempt to clear from the goal line.

The goal arrived inside the opening minute and immediately allowed Atletico to play on their preferred terms. Simeone’s team could protect its defensive structure, control possession and attack the spaces United left while attempting to equalise.

United eventually responded. Bryan Mbeumo had one goal-bound attempt deflected wide before forcing Jan Oblak into a save from a tight angle. Carlos Baleba also found space from a corner, but his free header went directly at the Atletico goalkeeper.

At the other end, Alejandro Grimaldo struck the post with a free-kick. Johnny Cardoso then appeared to double the lead shortly before half-time with a powerful finish from outside the area.

However, referee Glenn Nyberg reviewed the move and ruled that Marcos Llorente had handled the ball during the build-up. The goal was disallowed, leaving United only one goal behind at the interval.

United waste opportunities to equalise

Atletico continued creating the clearer openings after the restart. Julián Álvarez met a Barrios delivery but sent his volley against the post, giving United another escape.

Carrick’s side then produced its strongest attacking spell. Youri Tielemans released Bruno Fernandes, but the United captain failed to convert a presentable opportunity. Fernandes later exchanged passes with Amad Diallo from a short corner and struck the crossbar.

Those misses proved decisive. United created four big chances without scoring—their highest total without a goal in a Champions League match since facing Galatasaray in September 2012.

Carrick introduced Amad, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee as United searched for an equaliser. However, the visitors’ attacks remained disjointed, and Oblak dealt comfortably with most of the efforts directed towards his goal.

Yoro red card changes the contest

The defining second-half incident arrived when Jonathan David attempted to run beyond Yoro just inside United’s half.

The two players came together, with the referee initially awarding United a free-kick. VAR advised Nyberg to review the incident, and the decision was reversed. Yoro was dismissed for denying David a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Replays left room for debate over the level of contact. Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison described the red card as “soft,” while Carrick’s players protested the decision. Nevertheless, Yoro’s first senior red card stood, leaving United with 10 players for the final quarter-hour.

Atletico quickly exploited the numerical advantage. Lammens saved David’s initial attempt, but Lookman collected the rebound and converted from close range in the 79th minute.

The goal ended United’s remaining hopes of taking a point back to Manchester.

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United statistics

The statistics underline United’s frustration. They created more recognised big chances and won more corners, but Atletico controlled possession and converted the decisive moments.

United’s four missed big chances also demonstrated that the defeat cannot be explained only by Yoro’s dismissal. The visitors had opportunities to equalise while the teams still had 11 players each.

Pressure grows on Michael Carrick

United remain on three Champions League points following their impressive 4-0 victory over Sabah in their opening league-phase match.

That performance now feels increasingly distant. The defeat in Madrid followed other damaging results, including a 1-0 Manchester derby loss to Manchester City and a 3-2 Carabao Cup collapse against Brighton.

United have now gone five matches without winning and have recorded only two victories across the season. Although Carrick could question the red-card decision, recurring problems with defensive organisation, finishing and game management remain evident.

Lisandro Martinez added to the tension after the match by publicly questioning the club’s summer recruitment. He argued that Carrick needed a stronger squad to compete on nights of this level, while also accepting that the players had to perform better.

Carrick declined to discuss the comments in detail immediately after the game, stressing the importance of remaining united and preparing for the next fixture.

What the result means for Ugandan supporters

Manchester United command a passionate following across Kampala, Jinja, Mbarara, Gulu and other parts of Uganda. Supporters who stayed up for the 10:00 p.m. EAT kick-off endured another disappointing European performance.

The frustration will centre on familiar weaknesses. United conceded too easily, missed important chances and lost their discipline during a crucial period. However, their three Champions League points still leave an opportunity to recover during the remaining league-phase fixtures.

United travel to Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday before visiting Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 21. Those matches could prove important for Carrick’s position and the direction of the season.

End Note

Atletico Madrid deservedly secured their first Champions League victory of the season after punishing United’s defensive mistakes and missed opportunities.

Barrios’ opening-minute goal gave Simeone’s side control, while Yoro’s controversial dismissal made United’s recovery significantly harder. Lookman then converted the rebound that settled the result.

United can point to four big chances and the disputed red card, but their fifth consecutive match without victory reflects deeper concerns. Unless Carrick’s team improves its finishing, defensive concentration and consistency, pressure will continue to grow after every setback.
