Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time header earned ten-man Tottenham a 1-1 draw after Bryan Mbeumo had put Manchester United ahead at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke scored in the second minute of stoppage time as ten-man Tottenham Hotspur recovered to draw 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Bryan Mbeumo appeared to have secured a valuable home victory when he opened the scoring in the 73rd minute. Tottenham then lost Rodrigo Bentancur to a red card five minutes later, but Solanke’s late header denied United all three points.

Tottenham control the first half

Tottenham entered the match bottom of the Premier League table but played with greater confidence during the opening half. Roberto De Zerbi’s team pressed effectively, controlled midfield spaces and created the more dangerous opportunities.

Senne Lammens and Leny Yoro made important interventions as United struggled to escape pressure. Spurs repeatedly reached promising positions, but hesitation and inaccurate finishing prevented them from taking the lead.

The Guardian’s live report recorded a first-half expected-goals score of 0.96 for Tottenham and only 0.05 for United. Sections of the Old Trafford crowd responded with boos when the teams went into the interval at 0-0.

Manchester United improve after the break

Michael Carrick’s side returned with more intensity and greater purpose. United pressed earlier, moved the ball faster and began forcing Tottenham towards their own penalty area.

The introduction of Carlos Baleba strengthened United’s midfield, while Joshua Zirkzee gave the attack a more physical reference point. Diogo Dalot also offered energy from full-back as Carrick attempted to change a slow and disconnected performance.

The improvement mattered because United had entered the fixture following another 1-1 draw at Fulham. Another home setback would deepen concerns around their inconsistent start under Carrick.

Mbeumo gives United the lead

United finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Cunha carried the ball down the left and delivered a cutback towards Mbeumo inside the penalty area.

Jan Paul van Hecke did not close the forward quickly enough, allowing Mbeumo to turn and guide a measured shot across Kinský into the bottom corner. The finish rewarded United’s improved second-half approach, despite Tottenham having controlled much of the match.

Bentancur dismissed after touchline confrontation

The match became heated four minutes later. Van Hecke’s challenge near the touchline led to a wider confrontation involving players and staff from both teams.

Bentancur launched a reckless challenge towards Luke Shaw and then confronted the United defender after Shaw pushed him away. Referee Stuart Attwell showed Bentancur a red card in the 78th minute, while Shaw and Van Hecke received yellow cards.

Mbeumo almost added a second after running beyond Tottenham’s defence, but Kinský pushed his effort around the post. United nevertheless failed to manage possession securely or prevent Tottenham from delivering late balls into the penalty area.

Solanke punishes United in stoppage time

Eight minutes of additional time gave Tottenham one final opportunity. In the 92nd minute, Sandro Tonali collected possession on the left side and clipped a cross into the United box.

Solanke fought past Martínez and directed a clever header across Lammens into the far corner. The goal rewarded Tottenham’s refusal to accept defeat and punished United for failing to defend the full attacking phase.

Manchester United vs Tottenham statistics

The final numbers support Tottenham’s claim that they deserved at least a draw.

Expected-goals models can vary slightly, but the available data consistently gives Tottenham the higher attacking value. Spurs created the better opportunities before the interval, while United were more effective during their improved second-half period.

What the result means for both clubs

Manchester United finished the weekend with six points from six league matches, their poorest start to a season since 1986. They remained in the lower half, increasing pressure on Carrick to turn competitive passages into victories.

Tottenham moved off the bottom but remained inside the relegation places with three points. Their winless start is still concerning, although the response after Bentancur’s dismissal gives De Zerbi something positive to build upon.

What it means for Ugandan supporters

The 7:30 p.m. EAT kick-off suited Ugandan supporters following two of England’s most recognised clubs. Fans watching from homes, sports bars and viewing centres experienced a tense finish after a largely frustrating contest.

United’s substantial following in Uganda will be disappointed that the team failed to defeat ten men. Tottenham supporters can take encouragement from Solanke’s persistence and a collective response that preserved a point.

Conclusion

Tottenham deserved their point after controlling the first half and responding bravely to Bentancur’s dismissal. Solanke’s stoppage-time header rescued a performance that would have been harshly punished by defeat.

Manchester United will focus on another missed opportunity. Mbeumo supplied the breakthrough and the visitors went down to ten, but Carrick’s team lacked the control required to complete the victory.
