Kigezi HomeBoyz and coach Joseph Harold Mutyaba separate by mutual consent, with Kefa Kisala taking charge after a difficult UPL start.

The Kabale-based club announced the decision on 7 October 2026. Kefa Kisala has been placed in full charge and will lead the Gorillas’ survival effort.

The change comes after Kigezi Homeboyz lost 1-0 to Kitara at Hoima City Stadium. Four matches into their debut top-flight season, the newcomers have collected one point, scored once and conceded six goals.

What the official statement said

The official Kigezi HomeBoyz statement described the departure as a mutual agreement after talks with Mutyaba.

It confirmed that Kisala would assume the head-coach role. The brief announcement did not disclose contractual details or explain the change further.

The wording presents an agreed separation rather than a unilateral dismissal, although results increased pressure around the promoted club.

The Kawowo Sports report connected the decision to the Hoima defeat and the team’s early position.

A short tenure for Joseph Harold Mutyaba

Mutyaba was appointed on a two-year contract in June 2026 as Kigezi prepared for their first top-flight season. He replaced promotion-winning coach Sadick Sempigi.

The former Uganda Cranes midfielder arrived with a CAF A licence and experience from several clubs in Uganda and the region.

The competitive period proved brief. Kigezi lost 2-1 against Lugazi before drawing 0-0 with KCCA.

The goalless result delivered their first Premier League point. The Bangbet report on Kigezi holding KCCA captured that defensive resilience.

Progress did not continue. SC Villa defeated Kigezi HomeBoyz 3-0 at Wankulukuku before Kitara secured a 1-0 victory in Hoima. Those results left the newcomers with three defeats, one draw and no victory.

The heavy defeat in Kampala exposed the scale of the adjustment. As the Bangbet report on SC Villa’s win over Kigezi noted, the Jogoos punished mistakes and controlled the match at Wankulukuku. For Kisala, that performance offers a clear review point: the Gorillas must protect central areas, manage transitions better and give their forwards enough support to prevent long periods of pressure in their own half again.

Kefa Kisala inherits a demanding assignment

Kisala takes over a team urgently needing points and attacking improvement. Kigezi HomeBoyz have scored only once in four league matches, while their six conceded goals show that defensive work is also required.

Kisala’s priority is restoring confidence. Promoted teams need time to adjust to top-flight speed and physical intensity, but poor results create anxiety.

Kisala must also establish clarity in roles. Reports around his arrival in August varied, with some describing him as head coach and others identifying him as Mutyaba’s assistant. The latest club statement removes that uncertainty by explicitly placing him in charge.

He must identify a reliable attack, improve chance creation, and keep the team compact after losing possession. Kigezi showed discipline against KCCA but needs more threat.

Why the Kitara defeat increased the pressure

The 1-0 loss to Kitara was narrow, yet its importance went beyond the score. It extended Kigezi HomeBoyz’s winless start and again left the team without a goal.

One point from four fixtures is not decisive, but limited scoring, repeated defeats and an early gap are concerning.

The decision suggests officials believe a technical change can accelerate improvement. The Bangbet 2026/27 UPL fixture guide provides context for the tests ahead.

What the change means for Kigezi supporters

Kigezi HomeBoyz’s promotion gave the region a top-flight representative and created visibility for local players, businesses and young fans.

That excitement has not disappeared, but the coaching transition tests the club’s stability. Kisala will need support and clear communication as he works to turn encouraging moments into complete performances.

The team must also preserve belief among the players who earned promotion. A new coach may change tactics or selections, but Kigezi’s strongest route forward will combine top-flight guidance with the identity and resilience that brought the club this far.

Conclusion

Mutyaba’s departure closes a short chapter that began with optimism before Kigezi HomeBoyz entered their first Premier League season. The official explanation is mutual consent, but four winless matches created an obvious need for improvement.

Kisala now carries responsibility for stabilising the Gorillas, increasing their attacking output and preserving the confidence generated by promotion. His appointment provides a fresh start, but the club’s response on the pitch will determine whether the coaching change becomes a turning point.
