Jacob Opar scored as Ntugasaze beat Mbarara City 1-0 at Kiira Road Police Arena for their first Uganda Premier League victory.

Jacob Opar scored the decisive goal as Ntugasaze defeated Mbarara City 1-0 at Kiira Road Police Arena on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to secure their maiden Uganda Premier League victory.

Opar struck in the 29th minute after being supplied by James Tekakwo. Ntugasaze then protected their advantage through the second half, ending a four-match losing sequence and collecting their first three points since earning promotion to Uganda’s top division.

The breakthrough and final score are detailed in the Kawowo Sports report on Ntugasaze’s maiden top-flight victory. Supporters can also review the official Uganda Premier League fixture page.

Opar delivers the historic breakthrough

Ntugasaze entered the match under immediate pressure. Their first four league appearances had ended in defeats against Blacks Power, Maroons, BUL and Vipers, with the newcomers conceding 11 goals during that demanding introduction.

Instead of allowing those results to drain their confidence, the hosts produced the moment that transformed their afternoon. Tekakwo created the opportunity and Opar converted it after 29 minutes, giving Ntugasaze a first-half lead and something tangible to defend.

Ntugasaze show defensive resilience

Holding a one-goal advantage demanded a different quality after the interval. Ntugasaze had previously struggled to contain established top-flight opponents, particularly during the 4-1 loss to BUL and the 3-0 defeat at Vipers.

Against Mbarara City, however, the Brewers stayed organised and completed their first clean sheet of the campaign. Their ability to protect Opar’s goal showed improved concentration and game management. The defensive unit dealt with the pressure of chasing a landmark result rather than allowing anxiety to create unnecessary openings.

It was an important demonstration of maturity from a team still adapting to elite competition.

Mbarara City’s scoring problem continues

Mbarara arrived seeking their own first victory after starting with a defeat and two goalless draws. The Ankole Lions had collected points against NEC and Entebbe UPPC, but they had not scored in any of their first three fixtures.

That attacking drought continued at the Police Arena. Once Opar put Ntugasaze ahead, Mbarara needed to score for the first time this season to rescue the match. They could not find the equaliser, leaving them goalless after four league games.

The defensive record remains respectable: only two goals conceded across four matches. Nevertheless, clean structure alone cannot produce enough points if opportunities are not converted. Mbarara must improve movement around the penalty area, delivery into dangerous positions and composure when chances arrive.

Ntugasaze climbed to 15th place, moving above Mbarara City, Kataka and Kigezi HomeBoyz. Their goal difference remains a concern, but the first victory provides a base from which to pursue survival.

Mbarara slipped to 16th and occupy a relegation position at this early stage. They remain close to several teams immediately above them, meaning one victory could quickly alter the picture, but ending the scoring drought is now urgent.

What the result means for Ugandan supporters

For Ntugasaze followers, this was a milestone worth remembering. The club was founded in 2018, reached the FUFA Big League and secured promotion for the 2026/27 campaign. Winning a Premier League match only weeks into their debut season demonstrates the speed of that rise.

Mbarara supporters face a different concern. Their team is difficult to break down but urgently needs attacking confidence. The Ankole Lions host Blacks Power on October 11, while Ntugasaze welcome KCCA on October 13. Both matches kick off at 4:00pm EAT.

Conclusion

Ntugasaze’s 1-0 win was a defining early moment in their first Premier League season. Opar supplied the goal, Tekakwo created it and the entire team showed the resilience required to protect it. Mbarara defended competitively again but paid for another match without scoring. Ntugasaze can now approach KCCA with renewed belief, while the Ankole Lions must find an attacking solution before facing Blacks Power.
