Joshua Zirkzee scored the winner as the Netherlands beat Serbia 2-1 and moved to the top of UEFA Nations League Group A2.

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee scored the winner as the Netherlands defeated Serbia 2-1 and moved to the top of UEFA Nations League Group A2.

Teun Koopmeiners opened the scoring with a 31st-minute free-kick before Mihajlo Cvetković headed Serbia level four minutes later. Zirkzee, introduced at half-time, restored the Dutch lead in the 72nd minute from Tijjani Reijnders’ delivery across goal.

The victory maintained Xavi Hernández’s unbeaten start and marked Virgil van Dijk’s 100th international appearance. Serbia suffered their fourth consecutive group defeat.

Netherlands vs Serbia match summary

Joey Veerman, Ryan Gravenberch and Reijnders controlled possession. Serbia defended compactly and tried to release Cvetković and Dušan Tadić.

Koopmeiners broke the deadlock after 31 minutes when his free-kick travelled through a crowded penalty area and found the far bottom corner.

Serbia responded when Aleksa Terzić crossed from the left, and Cvetković rose above Koopmeiners to head beyond Bart Verbruggen. His first senior international goal made it level at half-time.

Xavi replaced Mexx Meerdink with Zirkzee at half-time, strengthening the link between midfield and attack.

In the 72nd minute, Reijnders sent the ball across goal and Zirkzee finished from close range. Veerman and Reijnders later threatened a third.

Zirkzee changes the match

Zirkzee gave the Netherlands a focal point who could drop into midfield and attack the six-yard area. His positioning placed him perfectly for Reijnders’ pass.

It was Zirkzee’s second senior international goal, with both coming in the Nations League. The Manchester United forward strengthened his case for more opportunities in a Dutch attack containing several developing options.

Koopmeiners advanced from an unfamiliar defensive role to support midfield, although Cvetković beat him in the air for Serbia’s equaliser.

Xavi’s half-time decision was ultimately decisive. Zirkzee offered different movement from Meerdink and gave Serbia’s central defenders another physical and technical problem.

Van Dijk reaches 100 Netherlands appearances

Van Dijk reached 100 senior caps and helped the hosts withstand Serbia’s late pressure.

Luka Jović missed a dangerous late chance before Verbruggen saved Nemanja Gudelj’s stoppage-time attempt.

Micky van de Ven then went off injured after all substitutions had been used, leaving the Netherlands to finish with ten players. Van Dijk and his teammates remained organised as Serbia sent late crosses into the penalty area.

Although the captain did not mark his milestone with a goal, securing three points and moving to top of the group provided a fitting result.

Netherlands lead the match statistics

The Netherlands controlled 64.4 per cent possession and attempted 22 shots. Serbia produced 14 efforts, keeping the result uncertain.

Serbia’s 27 touches inside the opposition box underline their attacking threat despite Dutch control. The visitors created enough openings to prevent the Netherlands from managing a comfortable finish.

What the victory means for Group A2

The Netherlands have eight points from two victories and two draws. They lead unbeaten Greece on goals scored.

Germany have five points, while Serbia remain pointless. The Netherlands host Greece on 13 November before visiting Germany three days later.

Xavi’s team are well placed but have not qualified. The Greece match will shape the group before the potentially decisive visit to Germany.

Serbia’s four defeats have left their qualification prospects in serious difficulty. However, their performance in Eindhoven was more competitive than the group table suggests.

What the result means for Ugandan supporters

Manchester United forward Zirkzee and Liverpool captain Van Dijk gave Ugandan Premier League followers familiar names to follow. Zirkzee showed how a substitute can change a match.

His movement after half-time created a clearer central target and eventually produced the winning goal. Van Dijk’s milestone also offered another significant moment for Liverpool supporters across Uganda.

Ugandan supporters should not assume this victory guarantees Dutch qualification. Group positions, player availability and tactical selections can change before the November fixtures.

Conclusion

The Netherlands earned an important victory through Xavi’s decisive half-time change. Koopmeiners provided the opening goal, Cvetković punished a defensive weakness, and Zirkzee delivered the winner.

Van Dijk celebrated his 100th cap with three points, although Serbia’s late pressure exposed areas the Dutch must improve. With Greece and Germany still to come, Group A2 remains open despite the Netherlands moving into first place.
