Klopp selected a youthful team, with Jonas Urbig in goal and Serge Gnabry captain. Bischof partnered Aleksandar Pavlović, while Wirtz supported Nick Woltemade.

Germany control the opening half

Germany immediately pushed Serbia backwards. Pavlović curled an attempt wide, Woltemade missed an 11th-minute header, and Gnabry and Wirtz forced reaction saves from Đorđe Petrović.

Serbia defended compactly and waited to counter. Their best first-half moment came when Kosta Nedeljković narrowly missed a dangerous ball across Germany’s box.

The breakthrough arrived after 39 minutes. Wirtz created space and struck the post before Bischof reacted fastest, converting the rebound for his first senior international goal.

Germany’s counterpress repeatedly recovered possession before Serbia could advance, allowing the hosts to sustain attacks.

Said El Mala replaced Gnabry at half-time for his senior debut. Germany maintained pressure as El Mala was denied and Woltemade shot over.

The second arrived after 61 minutes. Maximilian Mittelstädt advanced on the left and found Wirtz, whose intelligent touch escaped the defender before a controlled finish into the far corner.

Wirtz wore the captain’s armband during the second half. He influenced Bischof’s opener, scored the second and repeatedly carried the ball into threatening areas.

Mika Baur replaced Bischof and became the 1,000th player to represent Germany’s senior men’s team. Serbia found no route back.

Germany had almost three-quarters of possession and attempted 32 shots to Serbia’s one. They completed 489 more passes, won 12 corners and recorded 44 opposition-box touches.

Petrović’s six saves prevented a wider margin. Urbig made one, reflecting Serbia’s limited threat. Germany lacked finishing efficiency but kept the visitors under pressure.

Wirtz and Bischof lead Germany

Wirtz was the central creator. His shot produced Bischof’s rebound, while his calm finish ended Serbia’s hopes. He also carried and passed effectively between defensive lines.

Bischof balanced Pavlović, supported the press and circulated possession. Scoring at his Bayern Munich home ground added significance to his first international goal.

Germany’s defenders stepped forward after clearances, compressed the playing area and denied Luka Jović and Dušan Tadić useful service.

Why Klopp’s pressing worked

Germany kept short distances between defence, midfield and attack, so the nearest players could surround Serbia immediately after turnovers. Gnabry and Wirtz pressed from the front, while Bischof and Pavlović protected the central lanes behind them.

When Serbia cleared long, Germany’s defenders stepped forward to contest the next ball. That positioning prevented Jović from holding possession and denied Tadić time to organise counters. It also explains why Germany recovered 60 loose balls, and Serbia managed only three touches inside the home penalty area throughout the match in Munich.

What the result means for Group A2

Germany moved third with four points. Greece lead with seven, the Netherlands have five, and Serbia remain pointless. Greece’s draw with the Netherlands kept Germany within reach.

Germany visit Greece on Sunday, 4 October. Another victory would strengthen their recovery, while Serbia needs major improvement after three defeats.
