Inter Milan Start Strong, but Shakhtar Holds Firm

After suffering consecutive Champions League defeats against Real Madrid and Club Brugge, Cristian Chivu’s Inter Milan entered the contest desperate to revive their European campaign.

The Nerazzurri took control immediately, with Marcus Thuram testing goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk early on. Moments later, Hakan Calhanoglu combined brilliantly with Nicolo Barella before firing a shot that went wide.

Inter kept pressing for an opener, but Shakhtar’s organized defense proved hard to break down.

Midway through the first half, Ange-Yoan Bonny produced an impressive turn and shot, forcing Riznyk into another important save.

Despite Inter’s dominance, Shakhtar threatened through Valeriy Bondar, whose powerful header Josep Martinez brilliantly denied.

The first half ended goalless, highlighting both teams’ defensive discipline.

Bastoni Red Card Threatens Inter’s Champions League Comeback

Inter resumed the second half, determined to break the deadlock.

Bonny saw another attempt deflected into Riznyk’s path, while Thuram forced the Ukrainian goalkeeper into a spectacular diving save.

However, the match took a dramatic turn when Alessandro Bastoni received a second yellow card for an off-the-ball incident involving Oleh Ocheretko.

With approximately 15 minutes remaining and reduced to ten men, Inter suddenly faced the possibility of extending their miserable European run.

Shakhtar pushed forward, sensing an opportunity to capitalize on their numerical advantage.

Yet the hosts had other plans.

Cristian Chivu’s tactical substitution proved decisive.

Veteran midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan entered the pitch and immediately transformed Inter’s attacking play.

The Armenian delivered a perfectly weighted through ball to Carlos Augusto, who raced into space before calmly finishing past the advancing Riznyk.

San Siro erupted as Inter grabbed a priceless lead despite their numerical disadvantage.

Mkhitaryan nearly doubled the advantage shortly afterward but dragged his effort wide.

Shakhtar mounted a late comeback attempt, with Newerton and Bondar threatening an equalizer. However, Martinez produced crucial saves to preserve Inter’s narrow victory.
