Real Madrid returned to winning ways dramatically, edging Villarreal 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu thanks to Yan Diomande’s first goal for Los Blancos. However, a controversial red card for Vinicius Junior overshadowed the LaLiga encounter, forcing José Mourinho’s side to defend their narrow advantage with ten men.

The victory gave Real Madrid three crucial points in their pursuit of league leaders Barcelona and extended their impressive unbeaten head-to-head record against Villarreal to seven matches.

For football fans across Tanzania, the encounter delivered everything expected from Spanish football: missed opportunities, VAR controversy, individual brilliance and a tense finish.

Real Madrid Dominate but Mbappé Misses Early Chances

Real Madrid entered the fixture under considerable pressure after losing two of their opening seven LaLiga matches, leaving them nine points behind Barcelona.

Determined to close the gap, Mourinho’s men took control immediately.

The hosts nearly broke the deadlock inside seven minutes when Kylian Mbappé found himself in a promising position just six yards from goal. However, the French superstar squandered the opportunity, striking the post.

Mbappé continued to trouble Villarreal’s defense but was later denied by goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi after an excellent attacking move involving Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Ibrahima Konaté and Arda Güler also tried to break the deadlock, but neither found the target.

Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Real Madrid went into halftime without a goal, frustrating the Bernabéu faithful.

Yan Diomande Breaks the Deadlock in the 64th Minute

Mourinho responded to the disappointing first half by bringing on Marc Cucurella and Vinicius Junior after the break.

However, Villarreal looked more dangerous at first.

Alberto Moleiro fired narrowly wide before Pape Gueye forced Thibaut Courtois into an important save.

Those warnings appeared to awaken Real Madrid.

In the 64th minute, Federico Valverde delivered a perfectly weighted pass into Yan Diomande’s path. The summer signing controlled the ball expertly before drilling a precise finish into the bottom corner.

It was Diomande’s first goal for Real Madrid, and it could hardly have arrived at a more important moment.

The breakthrough sparked celebrations inside the Santiago Bernabéu and gave Mourinho’s side a much-needed advantage.

Vinicius Junior Sent Off After Controversial VAR Decision

Just when Real Madrid appeared ready to take complete control, the match took an extraordinary turn.

In the 73rd minute, Vinicius Junior finished a clever cut-back from Jude Bellingham, seemingly doubling Madrid’s lead.

However, VAR intervened.

Replays showed the Brazilian pulling Villarreal midfielder Nathan Saliba’s hair during the build-up.

Following the review, the referee disallowed the goal and issued Vinicius a straight red card.

The decision stunned the home supporters and transformed what had looked like a comfortable finish into a tense defensive battle.

With Real Madrid reduced to ten men, Villarreal suddenly had renewed hope of snatching an equalizer.

Courtois and Madrid Defense Secure Crucial Victory

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Real Madrid continued searching for a second goal.

Mbappé came agonizingly close to sealing the victory, but Gulácsi produced another excellent close-range save.

At the opposite end, Villarreal increased their attacking intensity.

Georges Mikautadze had an opportunity to level the score but directed his effort straight at Courtois.

Real Madrid’s defensive organization ultimately proved decisive as Mourinho’s men absorbed the late pressure and protected their slender advantage until the final whistle.

The result extended Madrid’s unbeaten head-to-head streak against Villarreal to seven matches, including six wins and one draw.

What the Victory Means for Real Madrid’s LaLiga Title Ambitions

Although the victory was far from convincing, the three points could prove significant in Real Madrid’s pursuit of Barcelona.

Three major talking points emerged from the contest.

Diomande’s growing influence: The summer signing demonstrated his attacking quality by scoring the decisive goal when Madrid desperately needed inspiration.

Vinicius’ disciplinary setback: The Brazilian’s dismissal could create further selection problems for Mourinho, depending on the suspension.

Madrid’s defensive resilience: Holding on with ten men highlighted the team’s determination, particularly after a challenging start to the season.

For Villarreal, the defeat represents another missed opportunity against a major LaLiga rival, despite producing a competitive second-half performance.
