The Netherlands survived a spirited Serbian challenge to secure a 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory in Eindhoven, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring the decisive goal as the Oranje climbed to the top of Group A2.

The result also extended Xavi’s unbeaten start as Netherlands head coach to four matches (W2, D2) and delivered his first home victory in charge. Serbia, meanwhile, remains at the bottom of the group with no points.

For football fans in Tanzania following the UEFA Nations League, the encounter delivered everything expected from a high-level European contest: goals, pressure, late drama and an Oranje side forced to fight until the final whistle.

Koopmeiners Gives the Netherlands the Lead

The Netherlands entered the contest looking to complete a Nations League double over Serbia and immediately attempted to take control.

Joey Veerman produced one of the first meaningful efforts, forcing Serbia goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic into a diving save inside the opening 15 minutes.

The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the half-hour mark.

Teun Koopmeiners, making his first appearance of the international window, delivered a dangerous low free-kick into the Serbian penalty area. Virgil van Dijk attempted to make contact, but the ball escaped everyone before finding the bottom corner.

Netherlands 1-0 Serbia.

It appeared the Oranje had gained control, but Serbia had other ideas.

Cvetkovic Punishes Netherlands

Koopmeiners was operating in an unfamiliar makeshift center-back role, and Serbia exploited that weakness to find their equalizer.

Aleksa Terzic delivered a well-weighted cross into the box, where Mihajlo Cvetkovic rose above Koopmeiners and directed an excellent header beyond Bart Verbruggen.

The goal was particularly memorable for Cvetkovic, as it marked his first senior international goal.

Suddenly, the Netherlands’ comfortable start had disappeared.

Serbia Turns Up the Pressure

Serbia returned after half-time with renewed confidence, and Cvetkovic almost struck again inside the opening minute of the second period.

After getting away from Koopmeiners, however, the forward failed to test Verbruggen properly

The visitors continued pushing for the lead. Lazar Samardzic tried his luck from distance before Cvetkovic also unleashed a powerful effort, but Verbruggen stood firm.

For a significant period, the Netherlands was forced to defend rather than dictate proceedings.

Their ability to survive that spell ultimately proved crucial.

Zirkzee Scores the Winner

With just under 20 minutes remaining, the Oranje produced the kind of flowing attack that eventually separated the two teams.

Denzel Dumfries drove a dangerous low delivery towards the far post, where Tijjani Reijnders intelligently redirected the ball into the path of Joshua Zirkzee.

The striker made no mistake, finishing from close range to restore the Netherlands’ advantage.

Netherlands 2-1 Serbia.

It was Zirkzee’s first international goal in two years, and it could hardly have arrived at a better moment.

Verbruggen Protects Oranje Victory

Serbia refused to surrender.

Nemanja Gudelj threatened to snatch a late equalizer with a dipping effort, forcing Verbruggen into a crucial save as the Netherlands tried to protect their narrow advantage.

The hosts’ task grew even harder when Micky van de Ven suffered a late injury, leaving the Oranje to finish the encounter with ten players.

But Xavi’s team held on.

The final whistle confirmed a valuable 2-1 victory and ensured the Netherlands ended their international window unbeaten under their new boss.

What the Result Means for Group A2

The victory sends the Netherlands to the top of UEFA Nations League Group A2, strengthening their position in the battle to reach the knockout phase.

Perhaps equally encouraging is Xavi’s start since taking charge. Four matches without defeat — two wins and two draws — suggests the Oranje are beginning to establish consistency under their new coach.

Serbia faces a much tougher situation.

Despite producing a competitive performance in Eindhoven, they remain bottom of Group A2 with zero points, leaving little room for further mistakes in their remaining fixtures.

Final Verdict

Netherlands 2-1 Serbia was far from an effortless Oranje victory.

Serbia caused serious problems and briefly threatened to turn the contest around, but the Netherlands showed resilience when it mattered. Koopmeiners opened the scoring, Cvetkovic responded for Serbia, and Zirkzee ultimately emerged as the match-winner.

For Xavi, the result brings his first home victory as Netherlands boss and extends his unbeaten opening run to four games. More importantly, the Oranje finish the international window sitting exactly where they want to be — top of Group A2.
