EPL Weekend Recap: Liverpool’s Fightback, Arsenal’s Woes, and Chelsea’s Top-Four Push

The English Premier League delivered another thrilling weekend of football on 8th and 9th March 2025.

Liverpool extended their lead at the top, while Arsenal’s title hopes took another hit. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest shocked Manchester City, and Chelsea climbed into the top four.

Here is a breakdown of the weekend’s biggest moments:

Liverpool’s Comeback Keeps Them on Top

Liverpool faced Southampton in what turned out to be a tricky match. The Saints took a surprising lead just before halftime through Will Smallbone.

However, Arne Slot made key changes at halftime, bringing on Robertson, Elliott, and Mac Allister. Those substitutions worked wonders as Liverpool turned the game around.

Darwin Nunez equalized, and then Mohamed Salah scored two penalties to seal a 3-1 victory. Liverpool remain unbeaten in 25 league matches, proving their dominance this season.

Arsenal Drop Points Again

Arsenal’s winless run stretched to three games after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Manchester United. The Gunners dominated the first half but failed to score. Bruno Fernandes put United ahead just before halftime with a brilliant free kick.

Arsenal’s pressure eventually paid off when Declan Rice scored the equalizer, but they couldn’t find a winner.

The draw leaves Mikel Arteta’s side 15 points behind Liverpool, making their title chances slim. United, on the other hand, are now unbeaten against Arsenal in six consecutive matches.

Nottingham Forest Stun Man City

Nottingham Forest delivered a defensive masterclass to defeat Manchester City 1-0. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute, finishing a brilliant pass from Morgan Gibbs-White.

City dominated possession but lacked cutting edge, registering just 0.85 expected goals (xG) despite 14 shots.

This was their ninth league defeat of the season, the most Pep Guardiola has suffered in a single campaign. Forest, meanwhile, secured their 12th clean sheet, with goalkeeper Matz Sels leading the Golden Glove race.

Brighton’s Late Winner Stuns Fulham

Brighton continued their fine form with a fourth straight win, beating Fulham 2-1. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham an early lead, but Brighton fought back. Jan Paul van Hecke equalized before Joao Pedro sealed victory with a 98th-minute penalty.

The win moves Brighton just three points away from the top four, boosting their Champions League qualification hopes.

Chelsea Enter the Top Four

Chelsea bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Leicester City. Marc Cucurella was the hero, scoring his second goal in two matches.

Cole Palmer missed a penalty, breaking his perfect record after 12 straight conversions. Despite that, Chelsea’s defense held strong to secure three important points. Leicester, meanwhile, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat without scoring.

Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town’s Opposite Fortunes

Crystal Palace secured their fourth straight win by beating Ipswich Town 1-0. Ismaila Sarr scored the late winner, continuing Palace’s impressive run under Oliver Glasner.

For Ipswich, the struggle continues. They remain the only Premier League team without a win in 2025. They had eight shots on target but failed to find the net once again.

Aston Villa Finally End Their Poor Run

After seven matches without a win following European fixtures, Aston Villa finally grabbed three points. Ollie Watkins scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Brentford.

Brentford’s home form has collapsed, having now gone seven games without a win. They are also the only team in the top four leagues in England without a home clean sheet this season.

Bournemouth Throw Away a Two-Goal Lead Against Spurs

Bournemouth looked set for victory against Tottenham Hotspur after Milos Kerkez and Evanilson put them 2-0 ahead.

However, Spurs fought back late, with Pape Sarr’s deflected cross and Son Heung-min’s penalty securing a 2-2 draw.

Bournemouth remain one of the best away teams this season, with only Liverpool and Arsenal picking up more away points. However, they will feel disappointed to drop two crucial points.

Everton Extend Unbeaten Run, Wolves Secure Vital Point

Everton and Wolves played out a 1-1 draw, extending Everton’s unbeaten run to eight matches.

Jack Harrison scored for Everton, while Marshall Munetsi became the third Zimbabwean to score in the Premier League, following Peter Ndlovu and Benjani.

Premier League Title Race and Relegation Battle Take Shape

With Liverpool firmly in control, Arsenal and Manchester City must now focus on securing Champions League places.

Chelsea and Brighton are chasing the top four, while Nottingham Forest continue their impressive season.

At the bottom, Ipswich, Brentford, and Southampton are all struggling, with Ipswich yet to win this year.
