Luis Suarez Breaks the Deadlock
Lens entered the match determined to build on their opening Champions League win over Slavia Prague. The French side controlled possession early but struggled to break down Sporting’s disciplined defense.
Florian Thauvin registered the hosts’ first meaningful attempt on target, but Sporting gradually seized control.
Midway through the first half, Luis Suarez opened the scoring, converting from close range after Nestory Irankunda delivered a clever pass into the penalty area.
The Colombian striker nearly doubled his tally shortly afterward, breaking through the Lens defense before goalkeeper Robin Risser produced a crucial save.
Lens almost responded through Franjo Ivanovic, whose curling 25-yard effort struck the woodwork, leaving Sporting narrowly ahead at halftime.
Goalkeepers Shine as Lens Fight Back
Lens renewed their attacking urgency in the second half.
Sporting goalkeeper Kaique Pereira delivered an outstanding performance, tipping Amadou Haidara’s powerful long-range strike over the crossbar.
At the opposite end, Risser denied Joao Simoes before Lens forward Odsonne Edouard forced another impressive near-post save from Pereira.
Despite mounting pressure from the French hosts, Sporting maintained their composure, showing the defensive organization that has underpinned their unbeaten run.
Issa Doumbia Seals Sporting’s Victory
As Lens pushed forward to find an equalizer, Sporting exploited the spaces left behind.
Substitute Silas Andersen delivered an excellent pass to Issa Doumbia, who calmly slotted past Risser to make it 2-0.
The clinical finish effectively ended Lens’ comeback hopes and ensured Rui Borges’ side returned to Portugal with another valuable Champions League victory.
Sporting CP Extend Impressive European Record
Sporting’s triumph produced several notable achievements:
- Two victories from two Champions League league-phase matches.
- Eleven consecutive away matches unbeaten across all competitions since March.
- Only their second victory in nine away encounters against French opposition.
- An unbeaten start to the 2026/27 season.
For Lens, the defeat was a rare home setback, marking just their third loss in 30 UEFA competition fixtures at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
