Kane finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in the voting, becoming the first Englishman to lift the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. He is only the fifth English player to win the men’s prize, joining Owen, Kevin Keegan, Bobby Charlton and Stanley Matthews.

The achievement carried additional meaning because the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony was staged at the London Palladium—the first edition of the gala held in the United Kingdom. For Kane, a London-born striker who became a Premier League legend at Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Bayern, it was a fitting setting for the biggest individual moment of his career.

Harry Kane’s Incredible 2025/26 Season in Numbers

Kane’s statistics made a compelling case for the award. His season included:

-

- 73 goals in 65 matches for Bayern Munich and England

- Eight assists across club and international football

- 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern

- 36 Bundesliga goals

- 14 UEFA Champions League goals

- Six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

- The Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and German Super Cup

- The European Golden Shoe

- A third-place World Cup finish with England

- The 2026 Gerd Müller Trophy

In the Bundesliga, Kane averaged one goal every 66 minutes. His finishing was only part of his contribution: he also dropped into deeper areas to connect attacks, create space for teammates and show the passing range that has long separated him from a conventional penalty-box striker.

The England captain became only the second player this century to score at least 70 goals for club and country in one season, following Lionel Messi’s 82-goal campaign in 2011/12. Kane also recorded five hat-tricks during the season, including one in Bayern’s DFB-Pokal final victory over Stuttgart.

Goals Power Bayern Munich to Domestic Success

Kane’s move to Bayern Munich was partly driven by his desire to compete for major trophies. After years of individual success in England, the striker transformed his scoring form into silverware in Germany.

Bayern won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal during the 2025/26 season, with Kane delivering in both competitions. His 36 league goals earned him a third consecutive Bundesliga top-scorer award and another European Golden Shoe. He also struck 14 times in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-finals.

His record-breaking pace continued into the new campaign. Kane became the fastest footballer to score 100 Bundesliga goals, reaching the milestone in only 98 league appearances. Separately, he reached 100 goals for Bayern in all competitions in his 104th competitive match—another exceptional scoring record.

These achievements demonstrate why Kane’s game is about more than longevity. Even in his thirties, he has continued to become more clinical, tactically intelligent and influential.

Kane Makes More History With England

Kane’s Ballon d’Or case was strengthened by his performances at the 2026 World Cup. The England captain scored six goals as the Three Lions finished third, their best result at the tournament since winning it in 1966.

His goals took him to 14 in World Cup competition, making him England’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament. That total also moved him into joint fifth place on the all-time World Cup goalscorers list at the time he reached the mark.

Kane’s leadership was equally important. Having experienced defeat in two European Championship finals, he once again carried England’s attack on the biggest stage and helped the team finish the tournament with a medal.

First English Ballon d’Or Winner Since Michael Owen

Kane’s victory ends England’s 25-year wait for a men’s Ballon d’Or winner. Michael Owen was the last English player to receive the award after his outstanding 2001 season with Liverpool.

For Kane, the honour represents long-awaited recognition at the highest level. Before 2026, he had never finished above 10th in the Ballon d’Or rankings despite being one of Europe’s most consistent goalscorers for more than a decade.

His latest success also carries historical importance for Bayern. Kane became the German club’s first Ballon d’Or winner in 45 years and its first non-German player to receive the prize.

Kane Also Claims the Gerd Müller Trophy

The Ballon d’Or was not Kane’s only individual honour of the evening. He also received the Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to the leading men’s goalscorer of the season.

It was another fitting achievement for a Bayern striker whose movement, finishing and appetite for goals have drawn comparisons with the legendary German forward after whom the trophy is named. Kane’s 73 goals represented the largest season total recorded by a winner of the award.

A Defining Moment in Harry Kane’s Career

From Tottenham academy graduate to England captain, Bayern champion and Ballon d’Or winner, Kane’s journey has been built on consistency and constant improvement. His 2026 triumph places him alongside the greatest English footballers and rewards a season in which he combined historic individual numbers with major team success.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or is the crown on a fantastic campaign for Harry Kane. Seventy-three goals, domestic trophies, a World Cup medal and record after record made his victory difficult to ignore. After years of being regarded as one of football’s finest strikers, Kane can now call himself the best player in the world.
