Juventus preserved their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League with a dramatic 2–2 draw against Stade Rennais at the Allianz Stadium. Zeki Çelik handed the Italian giants an early advantage, but goals from Mousa Al-Taamari and Boulaye Dia turned the match in Rennes’ favour before half-time. Nick Woltemade then converted a second-half penalty to rescue a point for the Bianconeri.

The match produced four goals, two penalties and a late Juventus effort that was ruled out for offside. The hosts missed a third straight win but remained unbeaten after three league-phase fixtures.

Juventus entered the contest looking to maintain the momentum created by victories over NEC Nijmegen and Celta Vigo. Luciano Spalletti’s team made an ideal start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute with a fast and clinical counterattack.

Woltemade drove forward before releasing Çelik into space on the right side of the Rennes penalty area. The Turkish international stayed composed and directed a confident finish across goalkeeper Brice Samba and into the far corner.

Rennes equalised in the 15th minute after exploiting gaps in the Juventus defence. A cross reached the far side of the area and was headed back across goal, where Al-Taamari was left unmarked to finish from close range.

The visitors grew in confidence after equalising and looked dangerous whenever they attacked with speed. Their pressure produced another major moment shortly before half-time.

Douglas Luiz was penalised for handling the ball while attempting to block a shot inside the area. The referee awarded Rennes a penalty, giving Dia the opportunity to complete the turnaround. The striker made no mistake from the spot in the 43rd minute, sending Guglielmo Vicario the wrong way and putting Rennes 2–1 ahead.

The Bianconeri returned for the second half with greater urgency. Rennes defended compactly, however, and Juventus initially found it difficult to create clear openings against the visitors’ disciplined shape.

The breakthrough arrived in the 67th minute when a handball inside the Rennes penalty area was confirmed following a review. Woltemade, who had created Juventus’ opening goal, converted from the spot to make it 2–2.

With the crowd behind them, Juventus pushed for a late winner. The decisive moment appeared to arrive in the 88th minute when substitute Jhon Lucumí found the net following a crowded set-piece situation. Celebrations were cut short, however, when the goal was disallowed for offside.

Woltemade had another effort blocked in stoppage time, but neither side found a winner.

The Juventus 2–2 Rennes result ended the Bianconeri’s perfect Europa League start, but it also extended their unbeaten league-phase record. Juventus moved to seven points from three matches, keeping themselves in a strong position in the race to reach the knockout rounds.

Spalletti can take encouragement from the character his players showed after falling behind. However, the manner in which Rennes scored twice will require attention, particularly as Juventus prepare for tougher challenges in Europe and Serie A.

Rennes will view the result as a valuable point earned away from home. Their organised approach, confident counterattacking and ability to punish defensive errors demonstrated why they can be difficult opponents in the Europa League.

The Europa League continues to deliver dramatic matches and unpredictable results.
