Cristiano Ronaldo moved another step closer to football history after scoring his 981st senior career goal in Al Nassr’s 3–1 victory over Neftchi Fergana in the AFC Champions League Elite.

The 41-year-old struck in the 42nd minute at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, doubling Al Nassr’s lead after Ângelo Gabriel had opened the scoring. Alisher Odilov pulled one back for the Uzbek visitors shortly after halftime, but an own goal in the 78th minute restored the Saudi club’s two-goal advantage.

Ronaldo has now scored in back-to-back matches, showing that his focus in front of goal remains sharp despite the controversy surrounding his relationship with the Portugal national-team setup.

With only 19 goals remaining to reach 1,000, one of football’s most remarkable individual targets is moving closer.

The contest was played in unusual circumstances after kickoff was delayed by approximately one hour because of a security alert in Riyadh.

Once play began, Al Nassr gradually took control against a determined Neftchi side.

Ângelo Gabriel delivered the breakthrough in the 33rd minute. The Brazilian attacker found space inside the penalty area and produced a powerful finish to give the hosts a deserved advantage.

Nine minutes later, Ronaldo supplied the moment everyone had been waiting for.

Sadio Mané delivered the ball from the right before Ayman Yahya redirected it with his chest. Ronaldo controlled the ball, turned inside the penalty area and finished beyond the goalkeeper, demonstrating the positioning, movement and composure that have defined his record-breaking career.

The goal sent Al Nassr into halftime with a 2–0 lead and took Ronaldo’s official senior career total to 981.

Neftchi Fergana refused to disappear from the contest.

Alisher Odilov reduced the deficit in the 51st minute after capitalising on uncertainty in the Al Nassr defence. The goal briefly increased the pressure on the home side, with the visitors gaining confidence and searching for an equaliser.

Al Nassr remained composed and continued looking for the goal that would put the match beyond reach.

That decisive third goal arrived in the 78th minute when Neftchi defender Akmaljon Gofurov turned the ball into his own net.

The own goal restored Al Nassr’s two-goal advantage and completed a 3–1 victory—the club’s first win of the current AFC Champions League Elite campaign.

Ronaldo’s latest finish was not simply another goal in an extraordinary career. It brought him within 19 goals of the historic 1,000-goal milestone for club and country.

Reaching that total would further strengthen his position among football’s greatest and most durable goalscorers.

From his early years at Sporting CP to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Portugal and now Al Nassr, Ronaldo has maintained an exceptional ability to score across different leagues, competitions and tactical systems.

His pursuit of 1,000 goals once appeared like a distant final challenge. At 981, however, it has become a realistic target.

Ronaldo’s continued fitness, regular playing time and central attacking role for Al Nassr give him an excellent opportunity to reach the landmark. His current run of goals also suggests that another productive spell could quickly reduce the remaining gap.

Ronaldo’s club form comes amid a public dispute involving Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation.

The forward recently apologised after leaving the Portugal camp, acknowledging that his actions should have consequences. However, he also alleged that the national-team coach had broken a promise concerning his playing time and the explanation for his omission.

The incident created uncertainty around his immediate international future, with disciplinary proceedings reportedly ongoing. It would nevertheless be premature to suggest that Ronaldo’s Portugal career is over.

Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has since called for calm and indicated that the federation, coach, captain and players want the situation resolved. Ronaldo has also expressed a desire to return to the national team after serving any punishment imposed on him.

His performance for Al Nassr therefore carried an important message: regardless of what is happening away from the pitch, his hunger to compete and score has not disappeared.

The question is becoming less about whether Ronaldo can reach the milestone and more about when it might happen.

Nineteen goals remain a demanding total, particularly for a player in the closing years of his career. Ronaldo, however, continues to receive consistent minutes, remains Al Nassr’s attacking reference point and still demonstrates elite instincts inside the penalty area.

His movement before the goal against Neftchi offered a clear example. Ronaldo recognised the developing attack, positioned himself between defenders and required only a brief moment to control, turn and finish.

If he stays healthy and maintains his current role, the 1,000-goal target could arrive sooner than many expected. Every Al Nassr match will now carry additional historical interest as supporters follow the countdown.

Although Ronaldo’s milestone dominated the headlines, the result was also important for Al Nassr’s continental campaign.

Ângelo’s opener rewarded their positive first-half performance, Ronaldo supplied the crucial second goal and the team recovered after conceding early in the second half.

Closing out the match demonstrated the composure Al Nassr will need when they face stronger opposition later in the competition.

For Ronaldo, the night delivered another goal, another victory and another reminder of his relentless pursuit of history.

981 goals scored. Nineteen remaining. The countdown to 1,000 continues.

Follow the AFC Champions League Elite, Saudi football and the biggest competitions worldwide with Bangbet.
