Supreme Sha Tin officially announced the arrival of the former Manchester City and Spain playmaker, confirming that Silva will travel to Hong Kong, join the squad’s training sessions and work towards full match fitness before making his debut.

Reports describe the agreement as a short-term deal, with some Spanish outlets suggesting it may initially cover one appearance. Silva could potentially make his debut against Hong Kong Football Club on October 18, although the final date will depend on his fitness.

After three years away from professional football, El Mago is ready to perform his magic again.

Silva expressed his excitement in a video message released by Supreme Sha Tin.

The Spaniard said he was delighted to join the club and was looking forward to experiencing Hong Kong’s culture, people, food and football. He also told supporters that he could not wait to travel and meet them.

Supreme Sha Tin described the signing as an extraordinary moment for the club. The newly promoted side is competing in its first Hong Kong Premier League season under English coach Tom Ballantyne.

For the club, signing one of the greatest midfielders of his generation represents a major statement of ambition. Silva’s presence should increase interest in Supreme Sha Tin and attract wider international attention to Hong Kong football.

Silva announced his retirement in July 2023 after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during Real Sociedad’s preseason preparations.

The injury denied him the opportunity to end his career on the pitch. His final competitive appearance came for Real Sociedad against Almería before the conclusion of the 2022/23 season.

Silva had spent three seasons with the Basque club after leaving Manchester City in 2020. His vision, intelligence and passing remained influential in La Liga, even during the closing stages of his career.

More than three years later, the experienced midfielder has now decided to write an unexpected final chapter in Hong Kong.

David Silva joined Manchester City from Valencia in 2010 and became one of the most important players in the club’s history.

During ten memorable seasons at the Etihad Stadium, Silva made 436 appearances and scored 77 goals in all competitions. He also registered 121 assists, a total bettered at City only by Kevin De Bruyne at the time of Silva’s original retirement.

In the Premier League, Silva recorded:

Those figures only tell part of the story. Silva’s greatest strength was his ability to control the rhythm of matches, find spaces between defensive lines and create scoring opportunities with perfectly weighted passes.

Despite his relatively small frame, he was remarkably difficult to dispossess. His close control allowed him to escape pressure, while his awareness helped Manchester City dominate possession against even the strongest opponents.

The Premier League has described Silva as City’s creative hub, while his former Spain teammate Santi Cazorla called him “the master.”

Silva arrived at City when the club was beginning its transformation into an English football powerhouse.

He played a crucial role in the historic 2011/12 Premier League title, when Sergio Agüero’s dramatic final-day goal against Queens Park Rangers secured City’s first league championship in 44 years.

Silva supplied creativity during that breakthrough campaign and finished the Premier League season with 17 assists. He remained a central figure as City won further titles in 2013/14, 2017/18 and 2018/19.

His intelligence allowed him to flourish under several managers, including Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola. Under Guardiola, Silva adapted to a deeper midfield position without losing his attacking influence.

He became an essential component of the team that recorded 100 points during the 2017/18 Premier League season. His ability to receive possession in crowded central areas helped City break down opponents who defended with compact formations.

During his decade in Manchester, Silva won:

Manchester City credits Silva with 436 appearances and places him among the club’s ten highest appearance-makers. He was the first player in 34 years to break into that elite group.

One of his final major contributions came in the 2019 FA Cup final, when he opened the scoring in City’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Watford.

Silva eventually left the Etihad in 2020 as a Manchester City legend. The club later honoured his achievements with a statue outside the stadium alongside those of Vincent Kompany and Sergio Agüero.

Before joining Manchester City, Silva established himself at Valencia after earlier loan spells with Eibar and Celta Vigo.

He helped Valencia win the 2007/08 Copa del Rey, scoring in the semifinal against Barcelona before playing in the final victory over Getafe.

After leaving England, Silva joined Real Sociedad and helped the club win the delayed 2020 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Club. That success gave him a second Copa del Rey title and another major trophy in Spanish football.

His performances for Sociedad demonstrated that his technical quality and understanding of the game remained intact well into his thirties.

Silva was also a vital member of Spain’s golden generation.

He made 125 senior appearances for his country and helped Spain win three consecutive major international tournaments:

Silva scored in Spain’s 4-0 victory over Italy in the Euro 2012 final. His opening goal helped Spain complete one of the most dominant performances in European Championship history.

Winning two European Championships and one World Cup places him among the most decorated Spanish internationals of all time.

Silva may no longer possess the physical sharpness of his Manchester City peak, but his football intelligence remains invaluable.

His arrival gives Supreme Sha Tin:

The immediate challenge will be managing his fitness following a long period away from professional competition. Supreme Sha Tin has already indicated that Silva will train with the squad and gradually build his condition before appearing in a competitive match.

The Hong Kong Premier League has welcomed several recognised international players in the past, including Diego Forlán at Kitchee. However, Silva’s arrival ranks among the league’s most high-profile transfers.

David Silva has already achieved everything required to be considered one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

He helped transform Manchester City, became a four-time Premier League champion and played a central role in Spain’s greatest international era. Now, at 40, he is preparing to entertain supporters once again with Supreme Sha Tin.

Whether his comeback lasts for one match or develops into a longer adventure, it offers football fans another opportunity to watch one of the game’s most elegant playmakers.

David Silva Excited by New Hong Kong Experience
