Cristiano Ronaldo may have played his final match for Portugal after abruptly leaving the national team’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of its UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark.

The Portuguese Football Federation has confirmed Ronaldo’s departure from the camp, while the 41-year-old forward also released a statement saying he would explain the reasons behind his decision at a later date.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has gone further, reporting that Ronaldo has made an “irreversible” decision not to represent Portugal again. If the report is confirmed, Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Wales at the Estádio José Alvalade on September 24, 2026, will become the final international appearance of his extraordinary career.

However, Ronaldo has not yet issued a formal statement announcing his retirement from international football. For now, his departure from camp is confirmed, but his permanent retirement remains a reported development.

Ronaldo Confirms Portugal Camp Departure

Ronaldo announced his decision shortly after Portugal coach Jorge Jesus addressed the media ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark.

The Portugal captain said he had decided to leave the camp following the coach’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença.

Ronaldo promised that he would tell Portuguese supporters “the truth” behind his departure in due course. He also wished Portugal and all his teammates success in their remaining fixtures.

The Portuguese federation subsequently released a short statement confirming that Ronaldo had left the Copenhagen camp. Portugal’s preparations continued with the remaining 24 players.

What Happened Between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus?

The reported disagreement developed after Portugal’s opening two matches of the 2026/27 Nations League campaign.

Ronaldo started the 1-0 victory over Wales in Lisbon but was replaced by Gonçalo Ramos in the 67th minute. João Félix scored the only goal of the match, while Ronaldo also had an effort ruled out by VAR.

He was then left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 victory against Norway. It was reportedly the first time in 18 years that a fit Ronaldo had remained an unused substitute in a competitive Portugal match.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo went directly towards the dressing room without joining his teammates in acknowledging the travelling supporters.

Reports suggested that Ronaldo was unhappy after expecting to play some part in the Norway match. Jesus defended his authority over team selection and explained that tactical decisions would always be made according to what he believed was best for Portugal.

The situation escalated when Ronaldo missed the team’s final training session before facing Denmark. Jesus initially denied that the forward had refused to train, while the federation confirmed that he had not participated in the session.

Pedro Proença Attempts to Resolve Portugal Crisis

The seriousness of the situation led FPF President Pedro Proença to change his schedule and travel to Copenhagen for urgent discussions involving Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus.

Proença had reportedly intended to attend Portugal Under-21s’ match against Gibraltar but instead joined the senior-team camp to help address the uncertainty surrounding the captain.

Meetings took place, but Ronaldo ultimately decided to leave. Some reports claimed Jesus and Proença made further attempts to persuade him to remain, although the precise details of the final conversations have not been officially disclosed.

Ronaldo’s private plane was also tracked travelling from Madrid to Copenhagen before its planned return to the Spanish capital, strengthening reports that arrangements had been made to collect him.

Has Cristiano Ronaldo Officially Retired From Portugal?

Not yet.

Ronaldo has officially confirmed only that he has left the current national-team camp. Neither his statement nor the federation’s announcement explicitly described the decision as an international retirement.

Nevertheless, O Jogo reports that the decision is final and that Ronaldo will not return to the Seleção. Other reports from Portugal and Spain have also suggested that his farewell is now expected, even though a formal retirement announcement is still missing.

The wording of Ronaldo’s message—particularly his promise to reveal the truth and his decision to wish the team good luck—has been widely interpreted as a possible farewell.

Until Ronaldo or the FPF formally confirms his retirement, the development should be described as reported rather than official.

Portugal vs Wales Could Be Ronaldo’s Final International Match

If Ronaldo does not reverse his decision, his final Portugal appearance will have come against Wales at the Estádio José Alvalade.

That setting would carry enormous symbolism. Alvalade is where Ronaldo first attracted Manchester United’s attention as a teenager while playing for Sporting CP in 2003.

Twenty-three years later, the same stadium may have hosted his final appearance in Portuguese colours.

Ronaldo started as captain against Wales and played 67 minutes before being replaced by Ramos. Portugal won 1-0 through João Félix’s first-half goal.
