England earned their first victory of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League campaign after second-half goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane sealed a 2-0 win over ten-man Czechia in Prague.

Pavel Šulc’s first-half red card gave Thomas Tuchel’s team a significant advantage, but England had to remain patient before breaking down the hosts. Gordon finally opened the scoring from a superb Trent Alexander-Arnold cross before captain Kane completed the victory in the 69th minute.

The result helped the Three Lions recover from their dramatic 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley and moved them onto three points in UEFA Nations League Group A3.

England struggled to establish their rhythm during the opening stages at the Fortuna Arena. Their passing lacked accuracy, while Czechia appeared more dangerous when attacking on the counter.

Šulc almost punished an England defensive mistake early in the match, but goalkeeper James Trafford reacted quickly to stop the Czech midfielder. At the other end, Morgan Rogers came closest to scoring for England when his effort struck the inside of the post in the 16th minute.

Bukayo Saka and Elliot Anderson also saw follow-up attempts blocked as Czechia survived England’s first significant spell of pressure.

The turning point arrived midway through the first half when Šulc caught Anderson with a late, high challenge.

The referee initially showed the Czechia midfielder a yellow card. However, after being advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, he upgraded the decision to a red card.

Czechia were consequently reduced to ten players in the 25th minute. The hosts responded by dropping deeper and protecting the space around their penalty area, making it difficult for England to convert possession into clear chances.

Kane forced Matěj Kovář into a save shortly before half-time, but the teams went into the interval with the score still goalless.

England required only two minutes of the second half to find the breakthrough.

After Czechia lost possession, Trent Alexander-Arnold collected the ball on the right and delivered an outstanding cross into the penalty area. Gordon timed his run perfectly before directing a controlled header beyond Kovář.

It was a reminder of Alexander-Arnold’s exceptional passing ability on his return to England’s starting XI. The Real Madrid defender made his first start under Tuchel and created England’s most important attacking moment with a trademark delivery.

Gordon’s goal was also his second in consecutive matches for England after he found the net against Spain at Wembley. His pace, direct running and willingness to attack space made him one of England’s most dangerous players throughout the match.

Kane secured the three points in the 69th minute.

Rogers drove into the Czechia penalty area before the ball fell kindly to the England captain. Kane reacted quickly and drilled a low shot into the far corner, leaving Kovář with little chance.

The goal was Kane’s eighth in his last seven matches for club and country, further strengthening the argument that the Bayern Munich striker deserves serious consideration in the Ballon d’Or race.

It was also Kane’s 87th goal for England, extending his record as the country’s all-time leading scorer.

Kane continues to demonstrate that he is more than a traditional penalty-box striker. His movement, finishing, passing and leadership remain central to England’s attacking system.

Tuchel’s side controlled the closing stages and nearly added a third goal. Eberechi Eze and Jude Bellingham were both denied by Kovář as the Czech goalkeeper prevented the scoreline from becoming more emphatic.

The England manager also handed senior international debuts to Alex Scott and Rio Ngumoha during the second half.

England’s victory was accompanied by their first clean sheet in seven matches. The Three Lions had conceded 13 goals across their previous six games, making the shutout particularly valuable for a reshuffled defence featuring Alexander-Arnold, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Guéhi and Lewis Hall.

The victory gives England their first three points in Nations League Group A3. Spain remain top of the group with six points following their 4-1 victory over Croatia, while England and Croatia have three points each.

England will face Croatia away in their next match before hosting Czechia in the reverse fixture at Wembley on October 6.

Tuchel will be encouraged by the response after the defeat to Spain, but England must become more creative against compact opponents. The red card gave them control of the match, yet they required Alexander-Arnold’s individual quality to unlock Czechia’s defensive structure.

Kane’s scoring consistency remains one of England’s greatest strengths, while Gordon is quickly establishing himself as an important player for the national team.

Alexander-Arnold’s return also gives Tuchel another creative option. His delivery from deeper positions can provide a valuable weapon when England encounter teams defending in numbers.

There are still tactical areas for England to improve, but a 2-0 away victory, two in-form goalscorers and a clean sheet represent an important step forward.

Football supporters can follow England and Europe’s other leading national teams while exploring the latest UEFA Nations League markets on Bangbet.

Depending on availability, bettors can consider match-winner, total-goals, both-teams-to-score and player-goalscorer markets.
