Italy continued their dominance over Turkey with an entertaining 3-1 victory in Bologna, climbing to second place in UEFA Nations League Group A1 and strengthening their push for qualification.

The Azzurri were forced to work for the three points after Turkey produced an energetic performance, but goals from Gianluca Scamacca, Riccardo Calafiori and Francesco Pio Esposito ultimately proved decisive.

The result also extended Italy’s remarkable unbeaten head-to-head record against Turkey to 16 matches (W12, D4).

Turkey Start Strongly in Bologna

Despite arriving in Italy without a point in the group, Turkey showed little fear during the opening exchanges.

Ozan Kabak tested Gianluigi Donnarumma from distance, while Salih Ozcan and Yunus Akgun also forced the Italian goalkeeper into action.

Italy initially struggled to impose themselves, but they thought they had found the breakthrough when Gianluca Scamacca raced through and finished beyond Ugurcan Cakir. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as the striker was ruled offside.

Scamacca did not have to wait long for another opportunity.

Scamacca Fires Italy Ahead

Italy eventually punished Turkey for failing to convert their early pressure.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo delivered into the penalty area, where Scamacca produced a spectacular volley that crashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

It was only Scamacca’s second international goal, but it arrived at an important moment for an Italy side looking to strengthen their position in Group A1.

The Azzurri headed into the break with the advantage, although Turkey had shown enough attacking threat to suggest the contest was far from over.

Simsir Gives Turkey Hope

Turkey maintained their attacking intent after half-time.

Aral Simsir nearly produced an equalizer after rounding Donnarumma, but the Italian goalkeeper recovered before the Turkish attacker could take advantage.

At the opposite end, Cakir prevented Italy from doubling their advantage by denying Issa Doumbia a close-range shot.

Turkey’s persistence finally paid off after the hour mark.

Zeki Celik crossed into the area before Eren Elmali flicked the ball toward the back post, allowing Simsir to tap home his first international goal and level the score at 1-1.

Suddenly, the visitors looked capable of turning it around.

Calafiori Restores Italy’s Lead

Turkey’s celebrations lasted only four minutes.

Nicolo Barella delivered a dangerous free-kick towards the back post, where Riccardo Calafiori climbed above Elmali and directed a looping header beyond Cakir.

The goal was Calafiori’s first for the Italian national team and immediately restored the hosts’ 2-1 lead.

It proved a crucial response from the Azzurri at a stage when Turkey appeared to have gained momentum.

Esposito Seals the Victory

Turkey kept searching for another equalizer, and Donnarumma again had to protect Italy’s lead when he parried a powerful effort from Ozcan.

However, pushing players forward inevitably created space for Italy to exploit on the counterattack.

The hosts eventually made Turkey pay.

Alessandro Romano supplied the cross before substitute Francesco Pio Esposito calmly side-footed home to make it 3-1 and put the contest beyond Turkey’s reach.

What Italy’s Win Means for Group A1

Victory lifts Italy into second place in UEFA Nations League Group A1 and keeps their qualification ambitions firmly alive.

The Azzurri have now won five of their last seven home matches, demonstrating why they remain difficult opponents on Italian soil.

For Turkey, the outlook is far less encouraging. They remain pointless with only two group matches left, facing the likelihood of finishing bottom and suffering relegation to League B.

Italy vs Turkey: Key Match Takeaways

Italy’s 3-1 victory highlighted both their attacking depth and ability to respond under pressure. Scamacca delivered when given his opportunity, while substitutes Calafiori and Esposito made decisive contributions.

Turkey can take some encouragement from their attacking performance, particularly during the opening stages and immediately after half-time, but their inability to maintain momentum following Simsir’s equalizer proved costly.

Final Verdict

Italy 3-1 Turkey was ultimately a story of efficiency.

Turkey created problems and deserved their equalizer, but Italy responded almost immediately, then used their counterattacking threat to finish the contest.

With Scamacca, Calafiori and Esposito all finding the net, the Azzurri collected three valuable points, moved into second place in Group A1 and extended their extraordinary unbeaten record against Turkey to 16 matches.
