Kenya’s Harambee Stars suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Guinea in the second round of Africa Cup of Nations qualification, with Serhou Guirassy’s first-half goal proving decisive.

After opening their qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against Eritrea, Kenya traveled in search of their first victory but found Guinea difficult to break down. Despite changes after the interval and a determined second-half effort, Harambee Stars could not find an equalizer.

Guirassy Punishes Kenya in the First Half

The contest began competitively, with Kenya attempting to contain Guinea while looking for opportunities to attack in transition.

Mohammed Bajaber was penalized for a foul in the 16th minute as the hosts gradually increased the pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute, through one of Guinea’s biggest attacking threats — Serhou Guirassy.

The striker found the decisive opening to put Guinea 1-0 ahead, handing Harambee Stars a difficult task heading into the break.

Kenya couldn’t respond immediately, so Guinea carried their slender advantage into half-time.

Harambee Stars Make Double Half-Time Change

Kenya responded aggressively from the bench at the beginning of the second half.

Timothy Ouma replaced Micah Obiero, while Ryan Ogam came on for Job Ochieng as the technical bench sought more attacking momentum.

The substitutions highlighted Kenya’s intention to chase the game rather than simply contain Guinea.

Further changes followed on the hour mark, with Shariff Sirengo replacing Mohammed Bajaber. Javan Omondi later replaced Ben Stanley Omondi in the 74th minute.

As the clock ran down, Amos Wanjala replaced Chris Erambo in the 87th minute, providing another fresh option for the final stages.

Guinea Protect Their Advantage

Guinea, meanwhile, managed their one-goal advantage effectively.

The hosts also refreshed their side throughout the second half, introducing players including Aguibou Camara, Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, Ousmane Camara and Mohamed Lamine Diaby-Fadiga.

Kenya continued searching for the equalizer, but Guinea refused to surrender the advantage established by Guirassy before the interval.

No second-half goals followed, and the hosts celebrated a hard-earned 1-0 victory.

Tough Start to AFCON Qualifying for Kenya

The result means Harambee Stars have taken one point from their opening two qualifiers, following the earlier 1-1 draw against Eritrea.

While losing away to Guinea by a single goal is far from disastrous in isolation, Kenya will know that converting competitive performances into victories will become increasingly important as the qualifying campaign develops.

The positive takeaway is that Harambee Stars remained in the contest until the final whistle. The bigger concern is the lack of a goal despite using several attacking substitutions in pursuit of an equalizer.

For Kenyan football fans, attention now turns to how the team responds in the next round.

Final Verdict: Kenya Left Chasing First Qualifying Win

Guinea 1-0 Kenya was ultimately decided by one clinical moment.

Serhou Guirassy’s 32nd-minute strike separated the teams, while Harambee Stars’ second-half substitutions failed to produce the equalizer Kenya desperately needed.

With just one point collected from the opening two matches, Kenya now faces greater pressure to pick up victories in the coming rounds. The AFCON qualifying journey is still developing, but Harambee Stars will need more cutting edge in front of goal to strengthen their push for qualification.
