Canada Beat Uzbekistan 2-0 Ahead of the 2026 World CupĀ

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, co-hosts Canada continued their preparations in impressive fashion with a 2-0 victory over World Cup debutants Uzbekistan in Edmonton. Goals from Jonathan Osorio and Jayden Nelson ensured Jesse Marsch’s side secured a confidence-boosting win in their penultimate warm-up match ahead of football’s biggest tournament.

The result will encourage Canadian fans as the team looks to make a strong statement on home soil when the World Cup kicks off later this month.

Uzbekistan Missed Early Chances

Despite Canada eventually emerging victorious, Uzbekistan created the better opportunities in the opening stages.

Veteran striker Eldor Shomurodov, Uzbekistan’s all-time leading scorer, came close to opening the scoring after capitalizing on a defensive error from MoĆÆse Bombito. However, the experienced forward failed to find the target as his attempted chip drifted wide.

The Roma striker continued to threaten and nearly broke the deadlock midway through the first half, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime CrƩpeau produced a brilliant save to keep the scores level.

CrƩpeau was called into action again just before halftime, denying Shomurodov once more in what proved to be a key moment in the contest.

Marsch’s Tactical Changes Deliver Results

Canada manager Jesse Marsch used the halftime interval to make seven substitutions, a move that completely changed the rhythm of the match.

Among the players introduced was veteran midfielder Jonathan Osorio, who wasted little time making his presence felt.

With just over 15 minutes on the pitch, Osorio collected the ball on the right side of the penalty area and used the slippery surface to his advantage. His low strike squeezed past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov at the near post, giving Canada a deserved lead.

It was Osorio’s first international goal in two years, and a timely reminder of his quality as competition for starting places intensifies ahead of the World Cup.

Nelson Seals Victory in Stoppage Time

Canada thought they had doubled their advantage late in the game when Promise David fired home a powerful effort. However, celebrations were cut short after the assistant referee raised the offside flag.

The hosts were not to be denied a second goal for long.

Deep into stoppage time, Jayden Nelson capped off an impressive team move. After receiving a perfectly weighted pass from Tani Oluwaseyi, Nelson remained calm and slotted the ball beyond Nematov to secure a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The goal added further gloss to an encouraging second-half performance from the Canadians.

Positive Signs Ahead of the World Cup

The victory gives Canada valuable momentum as they prepare for their final warm-up fixture against the Republic of Ireland.

Jesse Marsch will be particularly pleased with his squad depth, as several substitutes made strong cases for inclusion in the starting lineup when the tournament begins.

For Uzbekistan and coach Fabio Cannavaro, attention now turns to a challenging friendly against the Netherlands before making their historic FIFA World Cup debut.
