AC Milan painted the city red and black after beating Inter 3-1 in an entertaining Derby della Madonnina at San Siro.

Diego Moreira delivered a sensational individual performance, providing two assists before scoring a stunning free kick. Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot also found the net for the Rossoneri, while Alessandro Bastoni scored Inter’s only goal.

The victory extended Milan’s unbeaten run against Inter to eight matches across all competitions, including four consecutive derby wins. It also ended Inter’s unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

Pulisic Gives Milan the Perfect Start

Milan required only four minutes to take control of the derby.

Moreira found space on the right before producing a perfectly weighted cross towards the six-yard box. Pulisic escaped his marker and directed a header beyond Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez to give the Rossoneri an early lead.

It was Pulisic’s fourth goal in a Milan derby and established the tone for an aggressive first-half performance from Ruben Amorim’s side.

Inter barely had time to recover before Moreira created Milan’s second goal.

Rabiot Doubles Milan’s Advantage

In the 10th minute, Moreira played a low corner towards Rabiot on the edge of the penalty area. The French midfielder met the ball with a clever first-time effort that struck the inside of the far post before crossing the line.

Milan were suddenly 2-0 ahead, having punished Inter twice inside the opening 10 minutes.

The movement and execution demonstrated how well prepared the Rossoneri were for the occasion. Moreira was central to both attacks, producing the quality Milan needed whenever he received possession.

Bastoni Gives Inter Hope

Inter responded in the 22nd minute through a set piece.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu delivered a corner that Manuel Akanji flicked towards the back post, allowing Bastoni to head home from close range. The goal reduced the deficit to 2-1 and briefly changed the momentum of the match.

Mike Maignan then produced a vital reflex save to deny Djed Spence an equaliser. Inter increased the pressure, but Milan survived and soon restored their two-goal advantage through the outstanding Moreira.

Diego Moreira Scores Stunning Free Kick

Moreira completed his remarkable first-half performance in the 43rd minute.

The Belgian winger stepped forward to take a free kick from approximately 25 yards and curled a beautiful left-footed effort over the wall and beyond Martínez. It was a goal worthy of deciding any derby and sent Milan into the break leading 3-1.

Moreira had directly contributed to all three goals—assisting Pulisic and Rabiot before scoring himself. He became only the second Milan player in the last 20 years to register three goal contributions in a Serie A derby against Inter, following Rafael Leão in 2022.

Milan Control the Second Half

After an action-packed opening period, Milan produced a controlled and disciplined second-half display.

Inter enjoyed possession and attempted to increase the pressure, but Maignan and the Rossoneri defence limited their clear opportunities. Carlos Augusto failed to convert a promising chance, while Inter briefly appealed for a penalty following a suspected handball.

The referee initially pointed to the spot, but a VAR review showed that the ball had struck Mario Gila’s chest rather than his arm. The decision was overturned, ending Inter’s best opportunity to get back into the contest.

Milan managed the closing stages effectively and protected their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

Diego Moreira Named Milan Derby MVP

Moreira was deservedly named Milan’s MVP following his one-goal, two-assist performance.

Beyond his direct goal contributions, the winger gave Inter’s defence problems with his pace, movement and delivery from set pieces. His display showed confidence and personality on one of Italian football’s biggest stages.

Only three direct free kicks have been scored by Milan against Inter since detailed data collection began in 2004/05. Moreira joined Andrea Pirlo and Theo Hernández on that exclusive list.

What the Result Means for the Serie A Title Race

Milan’s victory moved them to 21 points from 10 matches and strengthened their position in the European qualification race.

Inter remained on 25 points after suffering their first league defeat of the season. The result opened the door for Lazio, who subsequently defeated Cagliari 2-1 to move three points clear at the top with 28 points.

Although Milan remain seven points behind Lazio, their dominant derby performance demonstrated that they can compete with Serie A’s strongest teams. Finding greater consistency will be essential if the Rossoneri want to challenge near the top.
