Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 6-5 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Anfield.

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute before Cody Gakpo converted another penalty three minutes later to make it 1-1. Neither team could find a winner during the second half, sending the closely contested fourth-round tie to a shootout.

After several twists from the spot, Joe Gomez converted Liverpool’s eighth penalty before Wesley Fofana sent Chelsea’s final attempt over the crossbar. The result means Liverpool will host Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola selected a youthful starting lineup for the match, giving important opportunities to Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas.

The young players were supported by experienced figures including Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch and Gakpo. Despite the changes, Liverpool competed confidently against a strong Chelsea team.

The opening stages were tight, with both teams attempting to control the midfield rather than committing too many players forward. Chelsea eventually made the breakthrough after Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo inside the Liverpool penalty area.

Rogers accepted the responsibility and confidently converted the resulting penalty in the 40th minute, sending Giorgi Mamardashvili the wrong way to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.

However, Chelsea’s advantage lasted only three minutes.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty of their own when Fofana handled the ball while defending a corner.

Gakpo stepped forward and powered a low finish beyond Mike Penders, bringing Liverpool level before half-time. The Dutch forward nearly added a second moments later, but Penders produced a strong save to keep the score at 1-1.

The two penalties brought a quiet opening half to life and set up an intriguing second period.

Chelsea began the second half positively, with Rogers forcing Mamardashvili into a good save. The forward remained one of Chelsea’s most dangerous attacking players, using his movement and pace to test Liverpool’s back line.

Liverpool also created promising opportunities. Ronald Araújo saw a close-range header saved by Penders before substitute Bradley Barcola had a deflected effort pushed behind by the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Both goalkeepers played important roles as the match became increasingly open.

Mamardashvili made an excellent one-handed stop to deny Marco Palestra, preventing Chelsea from taking a late lead. At the other end, Penders continued to impress as Liverpool introduced established attackers such as Florian Wirtz, Barcola and Alexander Isak.

Chelsea’s defenders also produced important blocks to deny Liverpool during a late goalmouth scramble. Despite the increasing pressure, neither team could find a decisive goal before the final whistle.

With no extra time in the Carabao Cup fourth round, the contest moved directly to penalties.

The shootout produced several dramatic moments in front of the Kop.

Alexis Mac Allister, Isak, Gakpo and Wirtz converted Liverpool’s opening four attempts. Pedro Neto, Rogers, Roméo Lavia and Jordan Henderson scored for Chelsea, while Valentin Barco struck the post.

Kostas Tsimikas then had an opportunity to win the shootout for Liverpool but sent his penalty over the crossbar.

Barcola restored Liverpool’s advantage before Levi Colwill made it 5-5. Penders saved Gravenberch’s attempt, giving Emmanuel Emegha the opportunity to send Chelsea through, but Mamardashvili dived to his right and kept the penalty out.

Gomez stepped forward and emphatically converted Liverpool’s next attempt. Fofana then fired Chelsea’s penalty over the crossbar, completing a 6-5 shootout victory for the Reds.

Trey Nyoni was voted Liverpool’s Player of the Match following an assured performance in midfield.

The young midfielder displayed composure in possession and worked effectively alongside Gravenberch against Chelsea’s more experienced midfield. His ability to remain calm under pressure was particularly impressive on such a demanding cup night.

Nyoni’s performance demonstrated the value of the Carabao Cup in providing young players with meaningful first-team opportunities. Ngumoha, McConnell and Koumas also gained valuable experience before Liverpool turned to their senior substitutes during the second half.

Iraola praised Nyoni’s performance and highlighted the importance of young players experiencing high-pressure knockout football.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso admitted the result was disappointing but praised his players for competing with courage.

The Chelsea boss described the defeat as a small setback and said his team would quickly shift its attention to the Premier League. Alonso also referred to the Carabao Cup as probably Chelsea’s least important competition during the season.

Despite their elimination, Chelsea produced an encouraging performance. Penders made several important saves, Rogers scored the opening goal and the Blues came close to winning both during normal time and the penalty shootout.

However, missed opportunities and Fofana’s decisive penalty miss ended their Carabao Cup campaign.

Liverpool will now welcome Bournemouth to Anfield in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The fixture will carry additional significance for Iraola, who previously managed Bournemouth. Liverpool will have home advantage as they attempt to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The victory over Chelsea also demonstrated the strength of Liverpool’s squad. Their young players competed confidently, while experienced substitutes and Mamardashvili helped the team survive a tense shootout.
