4-3 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter at Anfield.

Villarreal stunned the home crowd through early goals from Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona, but Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araújo brought Liverpool level before half-time. Mac Allister scored again after the break before Florian Wirtz completed the turnaround.

Tani Oluwaseyi’s late goal created a tense finish, but Liverpool survived to record their third victory from three Champions League matches this season.

Villarreal Silence Anfield With Two Early Goals

Liverpool entered the match as favourites, but their slow start allowed Villarreal to take control.

The visitors needed only four minutes to open the scoring. A defensive error presented Georges Mikautadze with an opportunity, and the forward punished Liverpool by finishing past Alisson Becker.

Villarreal continued to exploit spaces around Liverpool’s high defensive line. Their confidence grew as the hosts struggled to match the Spanish side’s movement and intensity.

The second goal arrived in the 29th minute following an excellent passing move. Pape Gueye, Alberto Moleiro and Nathan-Dylan Saliba combined before releasing Sergi Cardona, who advanced from left-back and produced an outstanding finish.

Liverpool were suddenly 2-0 down at home and facing the possibility of their first Champions League defeat of the campaign.

Mac Allister Starts Liverpool’s Recovery

Liverpool needed a response before half-time, and Alexis Mac Allister provided it in the 36th minute.

Kostas Tsimikas delivered a dangerous corner into the penalty area, where Mac Allister rose impressively and directed a powerful header beyond Peter Gulacsi.

The goal transformed the atmosphere inside Anfield and placed Villarreal under increasing pressure.

Liverpool completed the first stage of their comeback in stoppage time. Teenager Rio Ngumoha clipped an inviting cross towards the far post, Cardona failed to clear the danger and Araújo headed home from close range.

The defender’s goal in the second minute of added time sent the teams into the interval level at 2-2.

After appearing in complete control, Villarreal had surrendered their two-goal advantage in nine dramatic minutes.

Rio Ngumoha Takes Control at Anfield

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola made a significant tactical adjustment at half-time, replacing Araújo with Wirtz and moving Ryan Gravenberch into the defensive line.

The change gave Liverpool greater attacking freedom and allowed Ngumoha to become increasingly influential on the right wing.

The 18-year-old delivered a fearless performance against experienced defenders. His acceleration, direct running and close control repeatedly forced Villarreal backwards.

Ngumoha created Liverpool’s third goal in the 65th minute. After receiving a pass from Mac Allister, the winger escaped Cardona, accelerated beyond substitute Juan Foyth and pulled the ball back towards the midfielder.

Mac Allister arrived at the perfect moment and smashed his finish off the underside of the crossbar, completing Liverpool’s comeback and securing his second goal of the night.

Ngumoha finished the match with two assists and received major praise from Iraola for his ability to make the difference in one-on-one situations.

Florian Wirtz Scores Liverpool’s Fourth

Three minutes after Mac Allister gave Liverpool the lead, Florian Wirtz made it 4-2.

Tsimikas and Cody Gakpo combined to create space inside the Villarreal penalty area. Wirtz collected the ball and guided a clinical left-footed finish into the far corner.

The goal was an important moment for the German midfielder, who had faced pressure following a challenging start to the season. Introduced at half-time, Wirtz provided creativity between the lines and helped Liverpool control most of the second period.

With four unanswered goals, Liverpool appeared to have secured a comfortable victory.

Oluwaseyi Creates a Nervous Finish

Villarreal refused to accept defeat and found a third goal in the 87th minute.

Former Newcastle United forward Ayoze Pérez supplied the cross, which Tani Oluwaseyi converted to reduce Liverpool’s advantage to one goal.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser during the closing stages, exposing the defensive weaknesses that had caused Liverpool problems earlier in the match. The hosts, however, held firm and protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

Liverpool completed an extraordinary 4-3 victory in front of 59,610 supporters at Anfield.

Liverpool Maintain Their Perfect Champions League Record

The victory gives Liverpool nine points from their opening three Champions League matches and maintains their perfect start to the league phase.

It was a performance filled with both warning signs and encouragement. Conceding three goals at home will concern Iraola, particularly after Villarreal repeatedly found space behind Liverpool’s defensive line.

However, Liverpool’s reaction demonstrated their attacking quality, squad depth and belief. Mac Allister controlled the midfield after a difficult opening, Wirtz made an immediate impact from the bench and Ngumoha produced a performance beyond his years.

The ability to recover from 2-0 down also provided another reminder of Anfield’s special relationship with European football.

Villarreal Punished for Losing Control

Villarreal deserve credit for their brave start and clinical attacking play. Mikautadze and Cardona gave the Spanish side a deserved lead, while Oluwaseyi ensured Liverpool could not relax during the final minutes.

However, Íñigo Pérez’s team failed to manage the emotional and tactical demands of the match after Mac Allister scored Liverpool’s first goal.

Defensive errors allowed Araújo to equalise, while Villarreal struggled to contain Ngumoha’s pace in the second half. Their promising start ultimately ended without a point.
