Semenyo Injury: Major Ghana Blow

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Antoine Semenyo is expected to miss approximately eight weeks after suffering a knee injury during City’s 3–2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.

The Ghana international was injured late in the match at the Etihad Stadium and underwent scans the following day. Although the original concern was that the damage could be more serious, City now expect the winger to return around December.

The recovery period will rule Semenyo out of Manchester City’s immediate Premier League and Champions League fixtures. He is also set to miss Ghana’s crucial November international matches against Somalia.

City’s official update confirmed that Semenyo suffered the injury late in the Ipswich victory, which extended the club’s perfect Premier League start to seven wins.

Speaking before Manchester City’s Champions League meeting with AEK Athens, Maresca revealed that Semenyo was the main injury concern emerging from the Ipswich match.

“The only one that will be out for probably eight weeks is Antoine,” Maresca confirmed.

The City manager explained that the club had initially feared a more serious injury. However, the scan results provided some relief because the damage was not as extensive as first expected.

Maresca said Semenyo’s recovery must now be the priority, adding that the forward could return around December refreshed and ready to contribute during the demanding festive period.

There was more positive news concerning Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker also sustained a knock against Ipswich, but Maresca suggested he could be available for the Champions League match against AEK Athens.

How Important Is Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City?

Semenyo’s absence is a significant setback because his contribution extends beyond goals and assists.

The 26-year-old provides pace, strength, direct running and the ability to attack defenders on either side. His physical qualities allow City to stretch compact defences, while his willingness to press gives Maresca an important option when the team wants to recover possession high up the pitch.

Maresca previously praised the Ghanaian for contributing both on and off the ball. The manager highlighted Semenyo’s crossing, defensive work and ability to help the team even when he does not score. He also described the winger as one of City’s senior players.

Semenyo has registered two goals and three assists across his first seven Premier League appearances of the season. He scored twice and provided an assist during City’s thrilling 5–3 victory over Sunderland, demonstrating his ability to influence matches in several ways.

Semenyo Gives City Tactical Flexibility

One of Semenyo’s most valuable qualities is his versatility.

He can operate from the left, attack from the right or move centrally as a striker. Maresca confirmed that City had considered using Semenyo as a number nine when Haaland required rest.

That option will now be unavailable for the next two months.
