Manchester City strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Ipswich Town, extending their winning run under new manager Enzo Maresca to seven consecutive league matches.

Phil Foden opened the scoring before Erling Haaland struck twice, including the record-breaking 100th non-penalty league goal of his career. Ipswich refused to surrender and responded through Daizen Maeda and a late Zian Flemming penalty, but City held on to secure another important three points.

The result keeps the defending champions six points clear at the top of the Premier League table and further underlines the impressive start Maresca has made since taking charge.

Phil Foden Ends His Goal Drought

Maresca made several changes to his starting line-up, but Manchester City still began the contest with their familiar attacking confidence.

Foden delivered the breakthrough with his first goal since December 2025. The England international found space in the Ipswich defence and produced the composed finish City needed to take control of the match.

The goal was especially significant for Foden after a difficult spell in front of goal. Despite continuing to contribute through his movement and creativity, he had been waiting several months to get back on the scoresheet.

Ending that drought could provide an important confidence boost as City enter a demanding period of their Premier League campaign.

Haaland Reaches Another Historic Milestone

Erling Haaland once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most feared goalscorers in world football.

The Norwegian striker scored twice against Ipswich, bringing up his 100th non-penalty league goal in only 139 appearances. It was another remarkable milestone for a player who has consistently rewritten scoring records throughout his career.

Haaland’s physical presence, movement behind the defence and clinical finishing caused Ipswich problems throughout the match. His first goal gave City greater control, while his second ultimately proved decisive as the visitors threatened an unlikely comeback.

While penalties form an important part of any striker’s total, reaching 100 league goals without including spot kicks highlights Haaland’s extraordinary ability to score from open play.

Ipswich Town Fight Back Through Maeda and Flemming

""

Despite falling behind, Ipswich Town showed impressive character and refused to allow City to dominate without resistance.

Daizen Maeda pulled one back with a well-taken goal, giving Ipswich hope and forcing the league leaders to remain focused. His energy and aggressive pressing helped unsettle City’s rotated defensive unit.

Zian Flemming then converted a late penalty to make the closing stages uncomfortable for the home side. With the score at 3–2, Ipswich pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but City managed the remaining minutes and protected their narrow advantage.

Ipswich may have left without a point, but their second-half performance demonstrated the fighting spirit they will need throughout the season.

Ayyoub Bouaddi Impresses on Manchester City Debut

One of the biggest talking points from the match was the performance of teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who was handed his Manchester City debut by Maresca.

Playing in front of more than 60,000 supporters could have overwhelmed an inexperienced player, but Bouaddi appeared composed in possession and confident when operating in central midfield.

He circulated the ball intelligently, remained calm under pressure and showed why he is considered one of the most exciting young talents in City’s squad.

Maresca’s willingness to trust Bouaddi also demonstrated the manager’s intention to provide opportunities for younger players, even as City compete for major honours.

Maresca Makes Premier League History

The victory means Manchester City have now won seven successive Premier League matches under Maresca, making him the first manager to achieve the stated feat at the beginning of his City tenure.

The former Chelsea and Leicester City coach has quickly established his tactical ideas at the Etihad Stadium. City continue to control possession, create chances and press aggressively, but Maresca has also shown that he is prepared to rotate his squad.

This victory was not entirely comfortable, particularly after Ipswich scored twice, but successful teams must find ways to win difficult matches. City did exactly that.

Record Etihad Crowd Creates Memorable Atmosphere

A record crowd of 60,817 supporters attended the match, creating a memorable atmosphere inside the stadium.

Many City fans waved the club’s famous inflatable bananas, reviving a tradition that has long formed part of the team’s supporter culture. The colourful display provided a fitting background as Maresca’s side achieved another historic Premier League result.

The supporters were forced to endure a tense finish, but the final whistle was greeted with celebration as City maintained their advantage at the top.

What the Result Means for Manchester City

Manchester City remain six points clear at the Premier League summit after recording another crucial victory.

Maresca will be pleased with the attacking performance, Foden’s return to scoring form, Haaland’s historic achievement and Bouaddi’s encouraging debut. However, Ipswich’s two goals also provide the manager with defensive issues to address ahead of City’s next fixture.

For Ipswich, the defeat will be disappointing, but their ability to compete with the league leaders offers encouragement for the matches ahead.
