The GFA announced the revised timetable after consultations with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the five-member Black Stars Coach Search Committee. The extension is intended to attract a wider pool of qualified candidates and provide sufficient time for a comprehensive assessment.

With the evaluation process expected to continue through October and November, Ghana will not rush to install a permanent coach before the next international window. Instead, an interim technical team will prepare and manage the Black Stars during their November fixtures.

According to the GFA, the search committee recommended a more structured recruitment process after completing its initial engagements and preliminary review.

The association wants the appointment to accomplish more than simply filling the vacant position. It views the process as an opportunity to establish a stronger football identity, reinforce high-performance standards and create a sustainable foundation for the future of the national team.

The additional time gives interested coaches until October 15 to submit their applications. It also allows the committee to assess every credible option without making a hurried appointment under pressure.

The selection process will include:

The GFA says it is not merely searching for the strongest candidate on paper. The objective is to identify the person best suited to lead the Black Stars into a new era.

Former GFA Vice-President Fred Pappoe chairs the five-member committee responsible for identifying, evaluating and recommending a suitable candidate.

He is supported by:

The committee combines football administration, legal expertise, elite playing experience and high-performance knowledge. Its final recommendation will be submitted to the Ghana Football Association after the expanded assessment process.

The revised schedule is significant because the committee was initially working with a tighter timetable. Extending its work through November suggests the GFA and Sports Ministry want more extensive due diligence before committing to another permanent appointment.

The GFA has confirmed that an interim technical team will oversee the Black Stars during the November international window.

The temporary coaching team will be responsible for:

Local reporting identifies Ghana’s next assignments as a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Somalia. The matches carry major importance after defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia left the Black Stars without a point from their opening two Group C fixtures.

The GFA had not named the members of the interim technical team at the time of publication. Any names circulating before an official announcement should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.

The vacant position has already generated considerable discussion among supporters and the Ghanaian media.

Former Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has been linked with the job, while former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has reportedly expressed interest in becoming the next Black Stars coach.

However, the GFA has not confirmed either man as an applicant, shortlisted candidate or preferred choice.

The association’s official position remains that applications are open until October 15 and that candidates will undergo a transparent, merit-based evaluation. Until the committee completes its interviews and submits a recommendation, reports about favourites should be treated as speculation rather than confirmation.

The Black Stars coaching position became vacant on October 1 following the resignation of Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz after the September international window.

His departure came during a difficult period for the senior national team, increasing pressure on the GFA to appoint a coach capable of restoring confidence, stability and positive results.

The next manager will inherit an urgent challenge in AFCON qualifying. However, the role also requires a broader strategy covering tactical identity, squad discipline, player development and continuity between international windows.

Extending the application deadline could benefit Ghana if the additional time produces the right appointment. Public confidence will nevertheless depend on the transparency of the process and whether the eventual choice is supported by clear football reasoning.

The immediate date to watch is October 15, 2026, when applications close.

The Fred Pappoe-led committee will then continue evaluating, interviewing and shortlisting candidates through October and November. Its recommendation will be submitted after the expanded review, although the GFA has not announced an exact date for appointing the permanent coach.

Before the November international window, the association is also expected to reveal the interim technical team that will manage the upcoming fixtures.

For Ghanaian supporters, the extended deadline means a longer wait. It also gives the recruitment team a better opportunity to find a coach capable of addressing the Black Stars’ immediate challenges while creating a stronger long-term direction for Ghana football.

Stay connected to Bangbet Ghana for the latest Black Stars news, AFCON qualifying updates, match previews and football analysis.

When the Black Stars return to action, explore competitive football odds and exciting betting markets on Bangbet.
