Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score the winning goal as the Netherlands defeated Serbia 2-1 in the UEFA Nations League, extending Xavi’s unbeaten start as head coach.

Teun Koopmeiners gave the Netherlands the lead in the 31st minute, but Serbia responded through Cvetkovic just four minutes later. With the contest finely balanced, Zirkzee entered from the bench and scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute.

The victory moved the Netherlands to the top of their group and extended Xavi’s impressive opening run to four matches without defeat.

It was also an emotional evening for captain Virgil van Dijk, who celebrated his 100th appearance for the Netherlands by walking onto the pitch alongside his son.

The Netherlands began the match positively, controlling possession and attempting to move Serbia’s disciplined defensive structure out of position.

Serbia remained compact during the opening stages and looked to create opportunities through quick transitions. However, the pressure from the hosts eventually produced the first goal.

Koopmeiners opened the scoring in the 31st minute, giving Xavi’s team a deserved advantage. The midfielder moved into a dangerous position and provided the finish the Netherlands had been searching for.

The lead lasted only four minutes.

Cvetkovic responded for Serbia in the 35th minute, taking advantage of an opportunity to bring the visitors level. The quick equaliser changed the mood of the contest and ensured the teams entered halftime with the score tied at 1-1.

The Netherlands continued pushing after the interval but initially struggled to find a way through Serbia’s defence. Xavi turned to his bench, introducing Zirkzee to offer a different attacking threat.

The decision produced an immediate impact. Zirkzee scored in the 72nd minute to restore the Netherlands’ lead and ultimately secure all three points.

Koopmeiners delivered the breakthrough after 31 minutes.

The midfielder’s ability to arrive in attacking positions gave Serbia an additional problem to solve. With the visitors focused on containing the Netherlands’ forwards, Koopmeiners found the space required to put his team ahead.

His performance reflected the balance Xavi is trying to create in midfield. The Netherlands want to control possession, but they also require players willing to move beyond the ball and contribute in the final third.

Koopmeiners did exactly that. His goal rewarded the team’s positive start and temporarily placed the hosts in control.

Serbia deserve credit for responding so quickly after conceding.

Rather than allowing the Netherlands to dominate the remainder of the first half, the visitors increased their attacking intensity. Cvetkovic’s equaliser in the 35th minute punished a moment of vulnerability in the Dutch defence.

The goal gave Serbia confidence and forced the Netherlands to remain patient. The visitors continued defending in an organised shape while waiting for opportunities to counterattack.

Serbia’s resistance made Zirkzee’s second-half contribution even more important.

Zirkzee once again demonstrated his value as an impact substitute.

With the Netherlands searching for a winner, Xavi introduced the striker to add greater presence and movement around Serbia’s penalty area. Zirkzee responded by scoring in the 72nd minute.

His goal provided the decisive moment in a competitive match. The striker found the space he needed and produced a composed finish to make it 2-1.

Zirkzee’s ability to influence matches from the bench gives Xavi an important tactical option. He can play as a traditional centre-forward, drop deeper to connect with midfield or create space for teammates through intelligent movement.

Competition for attacking places remains strong, but decisive contributions such as this will strengthen Zirkzee’s case for more minutes.

The evening carried special significance for Van Dijk, who earned his 100th international cap.

The Netherlands captain walked onto the pitch alongside his son, creating a memorable moment before kickoff. Reaching 100 appearances represents a major achievement for a player who has been central to the national team for many years.

Van Dijk has provided leadership, defensive quality and experience through different stages of the Netherlands’ development. His presence remains particularly important as Xavi introduces new tactical ideas and younger players into the squad.

The defender marked the milestone by helping his country secure another Nations League victory.

Xavi’s appointment has brought renewed confidence to the Dutch national team.

After four matches, the Netherlands remain unbeaten and sit at the top of their Nations League group. The results suggest the players are adapting well to the coach’s approach.

The Netherlands have shown greater flexibility in possession and more willingness to attack through different areas. Koopmeiners’ opening goal against Serbia came from midfield, while Zirkzee’s winner highlighted the strength available from the bench.

The team still faced difficult moments. Serbia’s rapid equaliser showed that defensive concentration must continue improving. However, the Netherlands remained calm and found a way to win.

That resilience could prove just as valuable as their attacking quality as the Nations League campaign progresses.

The win strengthened the Netherlands’ position at the top of the group and maintained the positive momentum surrounding Xavi’s team.

More importantly, the performance showed that the Netherlands can respond when a match becomes difficult. Serbia cancelled out their opening goal and frustrated them for long periods, but the Dutch continued searching for a solution.

Xavi’s substitution proved decisive. Zirkzee offered the movement and finishing required to unlock Serbia’s defence, demonstrating the importance of squad depth in international football.

The combination of experienced leaders such as Van Dijk and match-winning options such as Zirkzee gives supporters plenty of reason for optimism.

The Netherlands’ 2-1 victory over Serbia delivered three important points and several memorable storylines.

Koopmeiners opened the scoring, Serbia responded through Cvetkovic, and Zirkzee emerged from the bench to win the match. Van Dijk celebrated his 100th international appearance, while Xavi extended his unbeaten start to four games.

The Netherlands are now top of their group and continuing to build confidence. If Xavi’s team can maintain this blend of control, resilience and impact from the bench, they could become serious contenders for the Nations League title.

Netherlands 2-1 Serbia Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score the winning goal as the Netherlands defeated Serbia 2-1 in the UEFA Nations League, extending Xavi’s unbeaten start as head coach.
