Queiroz’s departure was confirmed shortly after the Black Stars surrendered a two-goal lead in a shocking 4–2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. The result left Ghana at the bottom of Group C without a point from its opening two qualifiers.

The turbulence surrounding the national team intensified when the GFA also announced that Ghana’s international friendly against Morocco, scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026, had been called off following consultations between the two football associations.

GFA Confirms Mutual Termination of Queiroz’s Contract

In its official statement, the GFA said discussions with Queiroz were held “in a spirit of mutual respect” and that both parties considered separation the most appropriate decision under the circumstances.

The Association thanked the former Real Madrid and Portugal coach for his professionalism, commitment and contribution to the Black Stars project. It added that new technical arrangements and the next steps concerning the team’s leadership would be announced later.

Queiroz also issued a farewell statement in which he described coaching Ghana as an honour. However, he acknowledged that the required conditions were not fully established and admitted that the team’s recent performances contributed to the decision.

Despite the disappointing conclusion to his tenure, the 73-year-old urged Ghanaians to continue believing in the current generation of players.

Ghana’s 4–2 Collapse Against The Gambia

The defeat to The Gambia proved to be the final blow for Queiroz.

Ghana appeared to be in control after Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage. However, the Black Stars failed to protect their lead.

Mohammed Badamosi converted a penalty to begin the visitors’ comeback before Ebrima Colley equalised. Badamosi struck again in the second half, while Colley completed the remarkable turnaround with The Gambia’s fourth goal in the 88th minute.

The collapse exposed several of the problems that have troubled the Black Stars in recent matches:

The result was particularly damaging because it came at home and followed Ghana’s 2–0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké in the opening Group C qualifier. The Black Stars have therefore conceded six goals and collected no points from their first two matches.

Queiroz was initially appointed in April 2026 to prepare and lead Ghana at the expanded FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States. He arrived with extensive international experience after previous roles with Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt and several other national teams.

His first match ended in a 1–1 friendly draw against Wales. Ghana then produced a respectable World Cup group-stage campaign, beating Panama 1–0, holding England to a goalless draw and losing 2–1 to Croatia.

Those four points were enough for the Black Stars to progress to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. Their campaign ended with a narrow 1–0 defeat to Colombia.

After his initial mandate concluded, the GFA reappointed Queiroz on September 2 to begin a new phase focused on the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. That second spell lasted only two competitive matches—the defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

Queiroz’s complete Black Stars record stands at:

Although reaching the World Cup knockout phase represented a positive achievement, Ghana ended his tenure with four successive defeats and a deeply concerning start to AFCON qualification.

Ghana had been scheduled to face Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on October 4, but the friendly has now been cancelled.

The GFA said the decision followed consultations between the two federations and apologised to supporters, stakeholders and media partners for any inconvenience caused. It promised to announce new arrangements for the Black Stars ahead of their remaining AFCON qualifiers.

It is important to distinguish between the two apologies issued during the crisis: Queiroz apologised to supporters after the defeat to The Gambia, while the GFA’s public apology concerned the cancellation of the Morocco friendly.

Although facing Morocco would have provided a valuable test against one of Africa’s strongest teams, travelling for another match amid coaching uncertainty, injuries and poor morale may have offered limited sporting benefit.

Ghana’s difficulties extend beyond one coach or one bad result. Frequent managerial changes have made it difficult to establish a consistent playing identity, tactical structure and long-term selection policy.

The Black Stars possess talented players, but talent has not consistently translated into collective performance. Defensive errors, poor game management and difficulty creating clear chances have repeatedly damaged the team.

The loss to The Gambia was perhaps the clearest demonstration of the problem. Ghana played well enough to build a 2–0 lead but lacked the control, organisation and leadership required to finish the match.

Queiroz also suggested in his departure statement that the necessary working conditions had not been fully established. While he accepted that results contributed to the separation, that observation raises questions about the wider environment surrounding the national team.

The GFA must now act quickly but carefully. Ghana needs a coach capable of stabilising the dressing room, improving the defence and restoring confidence before the next round of AFCON qualifiers.

The next appointment should be supported by a clear technical plan rather than treated as another short-term response to disappointing results. The new coach will inherit a talented squad, but also a team sitting at the bottom of its qualifying group with no margin for further mistakes.

Ghana’s route to AFCON 2027 has become considerably more difficult, but qualification remains possible if the Association creates the right structure and the players respond positively.

For Black Stars supporters, the mutual termination of Carlos Queiroz’s contract represents another frustrating change in leadership. The immediate priority must now be stability, accountability and a clear footballing direction.

Follow the latest Black Stars news, international football previews and betting insights on Bangbet Ghana.
