Germany 2–0 Serbia: Klopp Celebrates First Victory

Germany finally earned their first win under Jürgen Klopp with a controlled 2–0 victory over Serbia at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

After beginning his reign with a draw against the Netherlands and a defeat to Greece, Klopp needed a response from his players. Germany delivered it with an energetic performance built around intense pressing, quick combinations and the creativity of Florian Wirtz.

The hosts dominated the opening stages but initially struggled to turn their possession into goals. Their pressure was eventually rewarded in the 40th minute.

Wirtz’s initial effort was saved, but Tom Bischof reacted quickly to convert the rebound, scoring his first senior international goal for Germany. The finish gave Klopp’s team a deserved advantage before half-time.

Germany continued to push forward after the break, with Wirtz becoming increasingly influential between Serbia’s midfield and defence.

The attacking midfielder completed an excellent individual performance in the 61st minute. Maximilian Mittelstädt supplied the pass before Wirtz produced a clever touch and composed finish to double Germany’s advantage.

Wirtz was directly involved in both goals, having forced the save that led to Bischof’s opener before scoring the second himself.

The 2–0 result also gave Germany their first clean sheet in seven international matches. Despite missing several established players, Klopp’s youthful side showed intensity, confidence and greater tactical understanding.

Germany’s next Nations League match will be against group leaders Greece, presenting Klopp with an opportunity to build on his first victory.

While Germany celebrated in Munich, Greece and the Netherlands played out an entertaining 2–2 draw in Thessaloniki.

Greece entered the match in excellent form and showed why they remain one of the group’s most dangerous teams. Goals from Christos Tzolis and Giorgos Masouras gave the hosts a commanding 2–0 lead before half-time.

The Netherlands struggled during the opening period, but coach Xavi made decisive changes at the interval. Tijjani Reijnders, Ryan Gravenberch and Noa Lang were introduced as the Dutch attempted to gain greater control in midfield and attack.

Those substitutions helped transform the contest.

Virgil van Dijk pulled one back for the Netherlands before Reijnders completed the comeback with the equaliser. Denzel Dumfries also had two efforts ruled out for offside as the visitors pushed for a winner.

The result preserved Xavi’s unbeaten start as Netherlands manager and demonstrated his ability to change a match from the touchline.

His team showed character after a poor first half, responding with greater urgency and more purposeful attacking football after the break. However, Greece’s opening-half performance also proved that their position at the top of the group is no accident.

Greece remain first with seven points after three matches, while the Netherlands sit second. The Dutch will complete the international window against Serbia.

For Greece, the draw may feel like a missed opportunity after leading by two goals, but remaining unbeaten and top of the group represents another positive result.

Wales produced one of the biggest results of the night by defeating Norway 2–1 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Norway made the perfect start when Martin Ødegaard released Oscar Bobb, who opened the scoring in the 11th minute.

Wales refused to panic and gradually began to create opportunities through their wide players. Sorba Thomas delivered a dangerous low cross in the 38th minute, allowing Daniel James to score the equaliser.

The major turning point arrived just seconds after the second half began. Torbjørn Heggem brought James down near the penalty area and was shown a red card, reducing Norway to 10 players.

Neco Williams then stepped forward and fired the resulting free-kick beyond Ørjan Nyland to complete the Welsh comeback.

Wales’ defensive organisation prevented Erling Haaland from having his usual influence in front of goal.

The striker was isolated for long periods and recorded only 11 touches during the first half. His best opportunity arrived after the break, but his header was directed straight at goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Wales protected the central areas effectively, limiting the service into Haaland while forcing Norway to attack from wider positions. Ethan Ampadu, Ben Davies and the Welsh defensive unit remained disciplined whenever Norway attempted to find their striker.

The victory was Wales’ first in Nations League A and their first win of 2026, giving Craig Bellamy and his players a significant confidence boost.

The latest Nations League fixtures produced three very different stories.

Germany finally delivered Klopp’s first win, with Bischof scoring his maiden international goal and Wirtz starring in attack. The Netherlands demonstrated resilience to recover from a two-goal deficit, while Greece protected their unbeaten record and position at the top of the group.

In Cardiff, Wales showed discipline and determination to stop Haaland and complete an impressive comeback against Norway.

Florian Wirtz Seals Germany’s Victory
