Greece made football history by defeating Germany for the first time, claiming a remarkable 1-0 victory in their UEFA Nations League encounter at the WWK Arena in Augsburg.
Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute, with his deflected effort beating Alexander Nübel and silencing the home crowd. The result continued Greece’s perfect start to the campaign while leaving new Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp without a victory after his opening two matches.
Germany controlled possession and created several opportunities, but Greece produced an outstanding defensive performance to secure one of the biggest results in their international history.
Greece Record First-Ever Win Over Germany
The visitors entered the contest without a victory in their previous ten meetings with Germany. Before the match, Germany had recorded seven wins and three draws in the fixture, scoring 23 goals to Greece’s ten.

Tzolakis Frustrates Klopp’s Team
Germany increased the pressure early in the second half. Conté tested Tzolakis shortly after the restart, while Ebnoutalib narrowly failed to connect with Nathaniel Brown’s dangerous cross.
Tzolakis then produced another important save to prevent Kimmich’s free-kick from finding the top corner. The Greece goalkeeper’s composure gave his teammates confidence as Germany became increasingly frustrated.
Klopp introduced Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt in search of the breakthrough, but Greece remained dangerous whenever Germany surrendered possession.
Fotis Ioannidis should have opened the scoring in the 67th minute after finding himself unmarked, only to direct his effort wide. That warning was not enough to prevent Greece from striking seven minutes later.
Kourbelis Scores Historic Winning Goal
Christos Tzolis carried the ball into the German penalty area and cut it back towards substitute Kourbelis.
The midfielder struck a left-footed shot that took a significant deflection off Kimmich before spinning into the bottom corner beyond Nübel. The goal officially arrived in the 74th minute and gave Greece a historic lead.
Klopp immediately responded by introducing Serge Gnabry. The substitute tested Tzolakis from a tight angle, while Yann Bisseck headed another opportunity wide.
Germany finished the contest with 16 attempts but could not find an equaliser. Greece defended bravely through the closing minutes to complete their first victory over the four-time world champions.
Kourbelis Praises Greece’s Fighting Spirit
Kourbelis described the victory as an enormous result against one of international football’s leading nations.
The midfielder praised the team’s willingness to defend together and endure periods of sustained pressure. He also expressed confidence that the current Greek squad deserves to compete in major matches and tournaments.
Greece celebrated the result with approximately 6,000 travelling supporters in Augsburg after earning six points from two consecutive away matches.
Jürgen Klopp Still Searching for First Germany Win
Klopp’s reign began with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands before the defeat to Greece in his first home match. Germany therefore remain without a win and sit third in Nations League Group A2, behind Greece and the Netherlands.
After the game, Klopp accepted responsibility for making several changes to his starting team. He admitted that Germany struggled to break down an opponent defending in a compact shape and said his team should not have lost such a match.
Kimmich was equally critical, describing Germany’s attacking performance as too static and short of ideas. Jonathan Tah also admitted that the team had not performed well enough to exploit its possession.
Although two matches represent only the beginning of Klopp’s tenure, Germany must quickly become more creative and clinical against defensively organised opponents.

Germany will attempt to secure Klopp’s first victory when they host Serbia in Munich on Thursday. Greece face another major challenge when they welcome the Netherlands to Thessaloniki on the same evening.
The two teams will then meet again in Thessaloniki on Sunday, 4 October. Germany will be desperate for revenge, while Greece will believe their organisation and counterattacking threat can produce another famous result.
