Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg after the German club agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
The 34-year-old Danish midfielder requested an early departure because he wants to be closer to his family in Denmark while continuing his recovery from the medical incident he experienced during an international friendly against Ukraine in June 2026.
Eriksen’s contract was originally scheduled to run until June 30, 2027. However, Wolfsburg accepted his request and allowed him to leave approximately nine months before the agreement was due to expire.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said in the club’s official announcement. “I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”
The midfielder has not announced his retirement, and his next step remains uncertain. For now, his health, rehabilitation and time with his family are the clear priorities.
Why Christian Eriksen Has Left Wolfsburg
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in 2025 after leaving Manchester United. He signed a two-year contract and brought extensive Premier League, Serie A and European experience to the Volkswagen Arena.
His season in Germany featured several personal highlights, but it ended with Wolfsburg suffering relegation from the Bundesliga through the play-offs.

Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense on June 7, 2026.
The incident occurred in the 65th minute. Medical personnel quickly entered the pitch, while players from both teams gathered around the midfielder. Eriksen was briefly unconscious but soon regained consciousness and was able to walk from the field before being taken to hospital for further examinations.
The match was abandoned.
Eriksen later confirmed that his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator had responded as intended. The device had been fitted following the cardiac arrest he suffered while playing against Finland at Euro 2020 in June 2021.
